Before I answer your question, I'd like to recommend that you give Babylon 5 another try. If you don't, you'll really be doing yourself a disservice, not necessarily regarding your understanding of Crusade, just "in general."
If you decide to take the above advice, follow the order at the bottom of this post. Bear in mind, that between the pilot and the series (Babylon 5), some things changed. They didn't have the makeup nailed down yet (e.g. Delenn, G'Kar, Londo's hair, etc.). In the pilot, Delenn was a somewhat androgynous character, and in the series, she's female. The pistol and rifle weapons changed, the head doctor changed (Dr. Kyle -> Dr. Franklin), and a lot of the more extreme aliens from "The Gathering" were dropped. Oh, BTW, the higher a Centauri's hair crest, the higher that individual's position/rank. e.g. Londo's is higher than his aide Vir's. It's a status thing.
If you decide not to take the above advice, watch Season 2 "The Geometry of Shadows" (because it introduces Technomages.) and then the movie "A Call to Arms" (the setup for Crusade) and then Crusade in the order listed below.
The Gathering (pilot) [2257]

The Legend of the Rangers [pilot movie, late 2265] "just under 3 years after the events of 'Objects at Rest.'" This means it will be set in late 2265]
A Call to Arms (TV Movie) [January 2267]
Crusade [January 2267 - Fall 2267; January 2267 - December 2271 was planned] This ordering, which JMS specified, ignores the uniform change in favor of maintaining continuity of storyline, except that I moved War Zone to position 1. Crusade only got 13 episodes because it was cancelled by TNT.
War Zone (chronologically takes place immediately after "A Call to Arms.") Racing the Night The Needs of Earth The Memory of War The Long Road Visitors from Down the Street The Well of Forever Each Night I Dream of Home Patterns of the Soul The Path of Sorrows Ruling from the Tomb The Rules of the Game Appearances and Other Deceits
Babylon 5 - The Lost Tales - Voices in the Dark (Direct-to-DVD, #1 of 1) [2271] Over Here Over There (contains a flashforward to 2301.)
In the Beginning (TV Movie) [told in 2278, about the events of 2245-2248] This has to happen between Crusade and "Sleeping in Light."
Sleeping in Light [2281].
KoshN - Brimstone [Stone lights a candle for the dead.] Gina: Who's that for? Ezekiel Stone: Me.
I'd add the caveat that you can, and to my mind definitely should, skip this film altogether. It was an attempt at a backdoor pilot that failed, so it has no relation to any of the other series or films in this time line.
Plus it was really, really, really bad.
True. In fact, to my mind, there are only three redeeming factors in the entire film, the characters of Dulann (the Minbari XO), Na'Feel (the Narn engineer, a lot like Na'Toth ) and Firell (the Minbari Healer/Medic).
With extensive editing, this could be an ~OK~ short, action film, but it's bad B5. The feeling that I had when I first saw it, was that it looked like something that someone not familiar with the B5 universe or its characters would produce. It felt foreign, not of the B5 family of episodes and movies. It was as if B&B (Berman and Braga) had made it.

It did smack of Bermaga -- the unholy union of Berman and Braga. I'm surprised that JMS was O.K. with such an obvious attempt to milk every last drop of life out of the franchise.
Well, JMS did write it, but probably viewed it as a necessary evil to get to the TV series where he'd be able to tell the kind of story he wanted to tell, and wrap up the dangling threads from Crusade (Crusade started in Jan. 2267.). The B5-Legend of the Rangers pilot, which took place in 2265, would have led into the Crusade storyline/Crusade years, and would have been JMS's way in, to wrap up the dangling threads from Crusade. See, The Sci-Fi Channel wanted the new B5 pilot and series to have a "younger cast" (younger than Crusade) and that ruled out a continuation of Crusade. Unfortunately, the way in turned just about everybody off and got killed by the football playoff game on the east coast.
When it comes to a new B5 project, there are no shortage of stumbling blocks and monkey wrenches thrown at it, be it Warner Brothers penny-pinching tightness that prevented original B5 CGI being made 16x9 (Not willing to pay for a $5000 monitor. ( themadgonerDOTcom/B5/B5Scrolls/B5ScrollsDOThtm#Screen1_01_1 ), or TNT turning out to be a sci-fi unfriendly place (TNT core audience doesn't like sci-fi.), or Warner Brothers losing 100% of 1993-1999 B5 and Crusade CGI, to Warner Brothers tiny budget for B5-The Lost Tales, to Sci-Fi Channel wanting a "younger cast." B5 is like Charlie Brown, the universe almost won't allow it to win; it's like fighting city hall every step of the way.
FWIW, Warner Brothers wants more B5-Lost Tales, but at the same tiny budget. JMS said no, and that the only B5 thing he's interested in doing now is a big budget B5 feature film. Warner Brothers, probably after choking for awhile, wants him to define "big budget."
