Two Drakh

One thing that has always confused me with the Babylon 5 series and the Crusade series is that there are two types of Drakh creatures. The first one was introduced in B5 season 4 as a swishy, out-of-focus, out-of-sync creature with big eyes and a bug-like head. Then later we are shown a more humanoid creature with horn-like appendages on its head and small eyes and mouth. I have copied screen grabs of both versions together in the same TV shot, so there must be a reason why there are two different creatures. I have searched many fan websites and blogs and boards to find the answer, but so far I have come up blank.

What is the purpose behind the two different versions of the Drakh?

In-universe, the ones with the skull-like masks as seen in "Lines of Communication" and later in a crashed ship on Crusade were the soldiers/workers. The ones with the horned heads who had Keepers as part of their bodies as seen on Centauri Prime were the leaders/planners.

In reality, the original design just didn't work so it was altered to make it look more otherworldly and the other design created when it came time for there to be a character for Londo and the Regent to interact with.

I always assumed the blurred Drakh in B5 (episode - Lines of Communication s4e11)
was blurred in order to hide their true appearance in case someone knew they worked with the shadows.

So there was no continuity issue as such.

Horned drakh, are the leaders

Red eyed/skull faced drakh are the warriors

"Shadow surgeons" drakh are the workers

I too thought those where two different types of Drakh for quite some time. Then I noticed that the neck and jawline of the skull faced creatures had the same color and texture as the other Drakh. That is when I realised that those skull faces are very likely helmets, and underneath they probably look like the other Drakh. The ones seen without the skull helmets usually have some position of rank and have speaking roles, while the helmeted ones are lower ranking troops.
