well seeing as how Nirvana's seems to be the most remembered, not to mentioned it was picked in TV Guide as the #3 Music Moment on Television, i'd go with that one.

reply

hmm... never saw it but look at it this way... it's most likely most remembered for due to Kurt Cobain's suicide, and also, if Siamese Dream by The Smashing pumpkins would've been released before Gish, Nirvana wouldn't be more well known... it'd be SP... and I'm not trying to start a war...

Nirvana is undoubtedly no.1
Kurt did a great job that night!

For a change, that will do just fine!

I like the Nirvana episode pretty good. However, I enjoyed the Pearl Jam episode more because the music has more layers. Pearl Jam simply has more talented musicians than Nirvana. This show was great! Pearl Jam is definitely no.1.

Alice in Chains is by far the best. Nirvana was badass, but my heart goes out to Layne Staley. If you don't believe me, get it and watch Frogs.

Yeah right whatever man. Neil Young is a useless mess.

Anyway, best unplugged is Claptons....or Nirvanas

reply

So agreed!

I'll give him 20 more minutes-and that's it!- Airplane!

unplugged's ive seen:
nirvana
aic
pearl jam
clapton
aerosmith

quality order:

5. clapton
for clapton fans, see it, by all means. for fans of the yardbirds, cream, and derek and the dominos who hated clapton solo, this is the reason we hate clapton.
4. Aerosmith
not a very good performance by tyler, but everyone else is pretty good. all in all, seems like they tried too hard. not spectacular, but ok. one more reason aerosmith is the biggest bunch of sell-outs in music history (though i loved their first two albums)
3. pearl jam
VERY good performance. pearl jam fans will think it's the best uplugged performance of any band. I especially like how eddie vedder spent every possible second between songs subtly ripping on mtv.
2. aic
Absolutely amazing. Everything good anybody has ever said about this performance is entirely true. This performance got me into AIC, and is pretty much a good starting point for anyone who wants to get into them. Anyone who considers themselves a fan of good music by all means NEEDS to see this performance.
1. nirvana
Despite what I just said about AIC's performance, this is BY FAR the best unplugged performance. I think this basically being Kurt's swansong only add's to the allure of the already perfect performance anyway. After months of resistance, Kurt finally gave into MTV and agreed to do this performance (despite having to reschedule at the last minute because Kurt bailed the first time around AT the set), and it is only fitting that his performance pissed MTV off more than any other unplugged performance. (look it up, there's dozens of reasons why). From the opening "good evening" to that eery silence at the end of "where did you sleep last night?" (as a reviewer on amazon.com put it, it's ironic that a band renowned and famed for being loud such as Nirvana has as one of it's most memorable moments being a two second period of silence), absolutely everything about this performance is utterly euphoric. This is my all-time favorite live performance of all time by quite a bit (this, coming out of someone who belittled them to no end a few months ago as being highly overrated on the music board), and I urge everyone to find some way to see this performance, or at least go to amazon.com and by the audio cd. It's too bad courtney won't let it go to dvd; this would sell like hotcakes.

And as we wind on down the road...

I thought R.E.M unplugged was really good in 1991 when they performed. and wanted to know where R.E.M unplugged from 91 is available or if at some point will it be released on dvd.

reply

Kurt Cobain gave what I thought might have been the best musical performance ever that night....Like someone said before that night made me a huge fan...it just makes you sick to think what his music could have turned into later in life...

Nirvana was the best unplugged. I am not a Korn fan by any means but I think that Korn comes close. And so does Aerosmith.

No question, Bob Dylan's Unplugged set is amazing. His versions of Desolation Row, Shooting Star, Like a Rolling Stone and With God on Our Side are sung with such serene clarity and passion.

Stone Temple Pilots - They had a very original set!

Psychos do not explode when sunlight hits them, I don't give a *beep* how crazy they are!

reply

the most disapointing was by far bob Dylans...what was he? totally drunk?

as for the best, I Will have lots of trouble chosing betwen Nirvana and Alice and Chains... followed close by Pearl Jam...

I never saw the stone temple pilots one, but now I'm going to search it!

a special note for the one with The Cure, it was very good and it had a very interesting aspect if i'm not mistaken in some songs they played with a "supermarket casio organ" that was totally getting in to the spirit of "unplugged"

reply

Nirvanas by far.

Nirvana to me set a standard during that performance that has never been eclipsed by anyone who has done Unplugged since. While its true that Kurt's death has added a weird vibe to the whole thing (the set looked like a funeral) but the show was groundbreaking even before he died.

I remember watching it when it aired (I was in highschool) and pretty much everyone was talking about how amazing it was the next day. I hate to think how many times I've heard someone say "I was never a huge Nirvana fan until I saw them on Unplugged" or "I'm not much of a Nirvana fan but I loved their Unplugged performance". To me that is the sign of a great performance.

I got chills the first time I watched it and I still do even now after many years and countless viewings.
