Inconsistencies

If Luigi can run off on foot to see his Anmerican girl friend and if there is a road into the camp that is travelled by trucks, then why do Luigi and the colonel take off croass country rather than follow the road.
Because the script said so.
Maybe the road was churned up or something when the camp was evacuated?
It's a long shot, but you never know.............

I found most of this movie did not make very much sense.
shareYou mean like a heard of wild horses (wild) ... just shows up and Luigi being an expert horseman just hops on ... bareback ... and rides the horse ... in the dark ... across country he does not know ...to his girl who is about 50 miles away???
