I only saw the ending -- partially -- on a YouTube clip. Still trying to find a copy of the whole thing.

SPOILER if answered by someone.

Mirren shoots the Franco Nero character at the end and kills him. Why? From what I can tell she has a gun and he's just standing there unarmed. If I am right what was the motive?

Turns out that he was actually one of the men in the 1940s who stole the paintings from an Italian villa with Maggie's neighbor Charles (they were lovers also). He tells her the story, and that it was he who killed Sebastian - for her - so he could remain as his current alias. She leaves the gun and he kills himself, asking her forgiveness before you hear the shot.
