The book wasn't bad, actually.
I remember my father saying that he had seen the first movie originally published as a novlette in one of those little book-sized Science Fiction magazines (like Asimov's Science Fiction or something).
Most likely because this was made at that sad point in movie making history that having a sequel that is set in space was the cool and profitable thing to do?
