Must be Nigel with the Brie

I've seen it referenced a few times as being funny and I remember it in the movie. However, what does the joke mean?

reply

It's not a joke, exactly.

The would-be Ivy Leaguers are having a "party" in their own way. They've gathered for a nice, quiet evening, and are waiting for their friend Nigel to show up. Instead of bringing beer or anything like that, which you'd expect at a teen party, he's bringing them a nice brie cheese for them to enjoy. So, when the doorbell rings, it must obviously be Nigel with the brie - not an entire high school of party-hungry teenagers with booze and a DJ.

They're expecting fancy cheese and a nice, quiet evening among friends. We as an audience know chaos is about to ensue, as everyone's basically gatecrashing what was billed as "a party" earlier on in the film.

Eh. I can't believe I just had to explain how that line was set up and why it paid off.

Makes a lot of sense now. Thanks

It's called humorous juxtaposition.

'It must be Nigel with the brie' conjures up sophistication and gentility. This thought is in the audience's mind for a split second as an invasion of drunken teens introduces just the opposite. This complete contrast makes it funny.

reply

Yeah I loved that scene I thought it was the best part of the movie.

reply

Made even funnier as you see Nigel with a tray of cheese at the front of the rush

reply

I crack up laughing at that part lol

reply

Omg I laugh my ass off every time I see that part! So hilarious! Poor kid, lol!

I cracked up when I read this thread title.

And now I'm cracking up after having read all of the replies ON this thread.
I definitely never noticed that Nigel actually was at the front of the pack with a tray of cheese. Now I feel like I need to go back and rematch the movie!! lol

Oh, and one more thing...you just read my signature.

Just watched this on FXX for probably the 15th time and it was the first time I noticed Nigel and his platter of brie

reply

It's so funny that you mention that! I must have seen this movie 50 times over the years and when watching today, it was the very first time I noticed Nigel and his platter of brie at the front of the rush!

After reading this thread, Nigel is starting to sound like the Glen Coco of this movie.

Reportin' live for Black TV: White folks are dead, we gettin' the f*@# outta here!

Wow- thanks for the link! I've seen this movie dozens of times and never noticed that part. Too funny.

Watching this as an adult last night- I actually felt bad for Bogey in a way I did not watching this in the movie theater years ago. Especially when the window was broken! it's funny watching movies from your youth then re-watching them as an adult. These days, I'd be the one throwing a party with brie! Wine too though :)
