Was L-Train better as a bully or a buddy?

I watched the earlier episodes and I noticed how L-Train was the school bully. Would it have been better if they kept this character as the antagonist or was he better as a pal to Chris and Jamal? I felt this series needed a antagonist but I guess the problems and obstacles they faced from episode to episode sufficed.
