I was weeks shy of my 11th birthday (and turned 12 during the run of the series) when Benji Zax and the Alien Prince first aired on CBS in 1983 in the US (fortunately I do not look 39!). Seeing the first episode at the time, I was hooked and knew this show was special--but due to local programming issues (Nebraska's priority on sports and news) not all 13 episodes were even broadcast at the time to my great frustration!
Prince Yubi was my first actual crush in life and my first fantasy that yes, I could actually meet him on his travels and help him on his adventures and maybe even live happily ever after with him.
My classmates were hot for Michael Jackson or some other recording artist. I wanted Yubi! Not Christopher Burton! Yubi...my hero from another world! Who of course, reverse Cinderella, was the one who needed the Terran girl's help.
I found the show recently on netflix as a sort of whim to type in the name (after on a similar whim successfully finding the 1979 series Buck Rogers in the 25th Century--another series from childhood I had not seen since its initial broadcast) to see what happened. To my shock, netflix has this on streaming video (hint folks, this is a good reason to join--you can watch the show any time!). Greedily, I hit play and watched one after another...I finished the entire series in just two sittings as a sort of guilty pleasure.
And rediscovered my old crush on Prince Yubi. After all, he and I would be about the same age (well, based on "Gold Mine" I gather that he's older than Chris Burton. "young" does not mean same as he looks if the "revolution" was in progress 100 antarian years before and if his parents were married while Trask was still on planet?)...or at least at a similar stage of life.
A girl can fantasize, right?
Yubi is the kind of man I really wish existed! *sighs* what a dream boat!
For physical DVDS, I got mine on amazon.com. Immediately after finishing the series on netflix.com.
