Snowfire (1958)

I have surfed all over the internet for info on the release of this darling movie on DVD/VHS. It seems WB is not intending to re-release it. There are 16mm copies available for theater rental via Swank Motion Pictures (1 800 876 5577). You will most likely have to go through your state theater supplier to request that it be offered.
The name & address of the VP of Marketing Warner Home Video are:
Mike Saksa
4000 Warner Blvd
Burbank Ca. 91522

It was suggested to me that snail mail requests would have the best chance of response.
I hope all Snowfire fans will take part in this quest for re-release.

I too have searched for this movie on Amazon and others, looking to buy it. I saw it when I was about 7 years old and remember it vividly. I wish I could add it to my library.

I have searched all over the internet for any mention of the movie Snowfire. I saw it when I was about 5 years old and never forgot it. I would love to see it again and if it ever came out on dvd I would definately buy it. This movie started my love for horses and all animals.

I've been looking for it for several years, too. It must have been 30 years since I last saw it, but I remember it well. Would love to find a copy or know when it might air again, perhaps on satellite.

Appreciate any info.

Thanks,
GG

Snowfire will not be re-released. The only existing copy outside of Warner's vaults is in Chicago's Swank Studios. You can rent it for about $150.

The issues appear to be partly legal, partly political. Certain scenes in the film appear to condone child abuse and violence against women, which would not be welcome with modern audiences although fans argue that these scenes are understandable in the rougher context of Western life nearly fifty years ago. But the real problem is legalities, probably connected with Dorrell McGowan's death some years ago.

Great to see the interest in this movie - must have been about 7 or 8 when my Grandmother took me to it. I too would love to see the movie rereleased on DVD.

THANK YOU for ALL your help and information Molly-31!! I will definitely email them, write to them, etc, etc. to see if we can get a release of SNOWFIRE... Geez, those scenes in the movie are NOTHING compared to what is shown on TV TODAY!! Are they nuts?? The movie also prompted my GREAT love for horses!! In fact, I resculpt 1:6 scale horses, and have my "SNOWFIRE" listed on Ebay tonight 10/10... Take a look. ;-) odiekarone

Owing to legalities which I can't talk about without permission, Snowfire is not to be re-released. You can write all you want but it won't do any good unless and until there are changes in that area. Why don't you join the Snowfire Revival Society list at topica.com -- you might learn more that way and anyhow get to talk with other people who liked the film.

reply

Hi Molly,
I have joined that list, but it seems to be "dead"... No posts since 2005. I think everyone is giving up hope? Maybe if we heard some encouraging news, we'd try harder... I'll keep trying, but I need help. If you can help, PLEASE do. All of us that were around to see it the first time will be dead and gone before it gets released IF we can't do it NOW... PLEASE see if you can get SOMEONE in a HIGHER position to get Snowfire released... PLEASE?? Thank you for all your effort, ;-) DIANE

I wish the family would take pity on us Snowfire lovers and release it for the world to see again. It gave me hope of maybe getting a horse of my own when I was a kid of 12. After a few years I got a horse of my own and talked to her and when I got an Arabian mare, I would brush and curry her and talk the whole time to her. Even when I would ride her I would talk to her sometimes not to nicely when she would try and take a bite of grass with a bit in her mouth, telling not to even think about it or I would jerk her fool head off. (Of which I was just talking, but I never would do that)! I just wanted her to know that she should pay attention to me & she would straighten her head back up and keep going on up the trail. Of course the lady riding behind me would ask if she listened to me all the time. I told her Shasta(the horse)most generally listened to me. I had had her for some 15 years and we were quite close.

What violence in the movie are you referring too? I don't recall it?

reply

it's coming out on dvd in the future unedited.

To the last poster, when will this movie be coming out? Where and how will it be available? I would love to see this again. It was a favorite from my childhood. Thanks for any updates anyone has.

reply

someone who knows someone at warner told me they are gonna release it to dvd offically.
fyi the swank rental copy is in black and white and is poor quality the warner print is technicolor and in exelent shape.

There's a listing for this movie on DVD on Ebay stating that the copyright has lapsed, making it public domain. I don't know if that's true (about the copyright) - probably not. But copies apparently are for sale.

reply

The eBay copies appear to be bootleg. Not sure I'd want to risk it.
