Why is this film called Praise?

This film is heaps better than the book - great acting, directing, photography and music (The Dirty 3 rule!). But why the name?

reply

I am not sure why this film is called Praise, but I absolutely agree, it is a fantastic film, with excellent actors and a fantastic script, it is a real pity that Peter Fenton's acting career didn't take off, I hope his music career is going well!

who even knows why the book was called praise. what a waste of paper.

No, but Gordon is, what a disgusting and pointless character with nothing to offer anyone, as he says himself. I realise that's the point, it's grunge fiction afterall, but that doesn't mean I have to like reading about some unemmployed bums crappy life whose greatest highlights are getting off and getting high. sometimes at the same time. Reading about someone screwing their girlfriend in a sh*t-stained toilet while actually sh*tting is not something I consider interesting or worthwhile.

But whatever.

Well, why read it then? I mean, did you have no idea what the book was about?

Whatever.

It was a set text for an english course I was doing at uni about youth narratives. We had to read 5 novels as well as watch films etc. I'd never heard of Praise before, had no idea what it was going to be like because I hadn't looked ahead in the course guide and I had to finish it to discuss it for tutorials. It's not a book I would have normally chosen, and even if I knew what it was going to be about I still would have had to read it anyway.

Fair enough. I loved the movie though. Fine Aussie talent, regardless of the subject matter.

I really found this movie disgusting and a huge waste of my time. I love a wide variety of movies and am pretty open-minded but I found this movie just awful. Gross! I just don't understand how it got so many stars on this site. Just my opinion, though.

welcome to the real world hunny!

Because Star Wars was already taken.

reply

Sorry but this movie is getting more raves than it deserves. It's a gross flick about gross people. Enough said.

reply

So you'd prefer a film about 'gross' people to be something other than 'gross'? Or are you suggesting that 'gross' people shouldn't be the subject of films? Gross people are an important part of society. It doesn't seem unreasonable that they be represented in film, and in a suitably gross way.

It's Saturday afternoon with horse racing, criket, 'Totally Australia', 'improv' music & a black&white WWI movie from 1949 dominating the typical Australian Broadcast Airwaves. The 'SelecTV' options include the same level of extremely poor selections. This movie 'Praise', like the newer counterpart, 'Standing Still' is pointless drival of obsenities, offences & outrageous proof that the Muslums have too much ammunition to regard us as nothing more than infidels.
The answer to the question why is it called 'Praise' is as obvious as the reason this film has no plot summary. Being without a plot, without a socially redeeming quality & without any entertainment value, it should have been named 'Puke'.

reply

Yeh those 'muslums' really hate it when Australians speak their mind and produce literature and film. Damn us for being so offensive and outrageous. Us infidels should just learn to shut up and put up with conservatism and strict observance of the holy text. After all, the world would be a better place without freedom of speech wouldn't it.

"When all are one and one is all, to be a rock and not to troll....."

reply

Needless to be Muslum to find fault with Australian's ideas of freedom of speech. Certainly the world would be a better place with respect of righteousness instead of respect of fugly...this kind of 'Praise' is certainly not righteous!
Unfortunately, fugly, phowl & phuqued seems to be the only things the entire western world seems to enjoy, if evidenced by something like "Praise"!
If there is acceptance of this type of 'entertainment', 'diversion' or 'education' & no acknowledgement of the counter-productivity to society, there's no hope for ANY humanity, east, west, north or 'Unda'! Bad is bad!

Thank you. I was starting to think that I am the only person who HATED this film. :o)
