Just to Clarify**SPOILERS**

Start out to say this is one of my favorite movies, as I've owned it since I was a boy, which might mean my review is a little biased.
As a history major, I was bothered by the fact I that I've never been bothered about Bagger and the race dilemma. In the book the movie is based off, it is clear Bagger is an angel. No one ever responds to Vance's color in 1930s Georgia. Redford did this purposely, for other people saw him as they wanted to see him. The movie highlights his divinity by the end when he is seen beckoning older Hardy to heaven.
I also never understand why it never received more attention. The cinematography was spot in, and the acting superb. Perhaps a little too "mystical" or preachy at times, it was never a sports movie however, but a "tale of overcoming adversity"

Thanks for clarifying. I've enjoyed this flick mainly due to the cast, music & cinematography, and the period seems to be well represented (to me, no expert). But, I've always had a little problem with the fact that Bagger is treated so respectfully by the locals. Hard to believe. As he is such a mystical figure it's a plausible explanation. That fixes it for me. Obviously I haven't read the book.

Is it possible (I haven't read the book) that the people treat Bagger with such respect bc Junnah does?
