Charlize Theron's Accent

Charlize Theron's southern accent in this movie is atrocious. It makes me cringe every time I watch it.

What you need to understand about Miss Invergordon is that she's only intermittently Southern. It's a rare medical condition. Typically the accent comes and goes, and every now and then she'll forget to fry her food or she'll open a door herself instead of waiting for man to do it.

reply

Well, just because her accent was awful doesn't mean she won't "melt in your arms like butter on a muffin." (Dumbest line in the movie).

In all fairness, I can count on maybe two fingers the number of non-southern actresses that did not BUTCHER the accent in a movie or tv show.

reply

Actually I think it was a "hot" muffin wasn't it?

He's taking the knife out of the Cheese!
Do you think he wants some cheese?

reply

Agreed. It was paws-uh-tive-ly GAST-ly.

I personaly forgave her,the moment she got down to her underwear and stockings at the start,my brain went all weird and my own speech went very strange its self LOL.

The tendency of most non-Southern actors is to overdo it.
Matt Damon does a pretty good job, though.

As a Californian, I thought her accent was adorable. Who knew? She is so beautiful that just watching her was pure pleasure, and her character was too cute. We're watching the movie right now, appreciating the performances and the messages beyond the game of golf. Wasn't the little boy great? Damon too. Great movie.

Her accent... How about her pin thin eyebrows!

they were so distracting, it looked like someone could just smudge them right off, very gross and fake looking.

reply

shoegal - all fashionable women plucked their eyebrows back then. take a little time to look at photographs of that era and you will see it. when the natural look came back most women let their brows grow out but some unfortunate few never did and the ladies had to 'paint' the brow on for the rest of their lives. you can see the those ladies in any walmart in florida today.

reply

This is true, about non-Southern accents going way overboard, though in this case, she both overdid and underdid it. Why is it so hard to find good dialect coaches who are Southern?

reply

Southern is kind of vague. If one is to crticize, you should be more specific. Charlize's accent was perfectly fine... There is more than one southern accent.

reply

Well, Matt did do a Southie accent for 'Good Will Hunting' . . . 😉

reply

actuallty she could always speak English. it's just that her first language was Afrikaans. In south Africa, Most afrikaans children are required to learn English and vice versa.

reply

Have you been to Savannah? As frightening as it sounds, that's exactly the way they speak! If anything, she toned it down a bit. If she used the actual accent, she'd have been unintelligible!

reply

Paula Deen is actually from Albany,(southwest)GA. And that's what her accent sounds like, not a Savannah accent.

reply

Who cares if she got the accent wrong, her voice was still mesmerizing in this.

I have heard Charlize speaking with a very good Southern accent. It wasn't perfect, but other folks probably didn't know that.

I think this accent she threw out in this movie was on purpose.

reply

I think Charilze made a pretty sexy Southern Bell for a 25 year old (in 2000) South African. It was nice to see she put on a bit of weight for the roll to make her a bit curvier and not the twig thin Super Model that is her usual look. Her Southern Accent really turned me on and while I love my wife I may be in love with the fictional Adele Invergordon from "The Legend of Bagger Vance" lucky Junuh

reply

Her accent, I couldn't watch the movie because of Jack Lemmon's accent narrating it. Really, they couldn't find someone who really has a southern accent to narrate it?
