Is Will Smith a ghost in this movie?

? haven't seen it in a while and I forgot, is he a ghost?

reply

I just saw the movie for the first time on TV tonight. Bagger Vance's true identity is never actually revealed. I, personally, believe he was a sort of Golf Angel, sent to help people with their lives through their golf game. Golf is often said to mirror life itself.

"Bagger Vance" and "R.Junah" are representations of Bhagavan (Krishna) and Arjuna, from the Hindu text "The Bhagavad Gita". The lessons learned by Rannulph are loosely based on those Krishna teaches to Arjuna while masquerading as his lowly chariot driver.

Thanks for the info. I know next to nothing about Hindu philosophy, but the representations you describe are clearly relevant.

Actually he is supposed to represent much more than a guardian angel. It is considered to be a representation of Jesus Christ Or God.

His name comes from the Hindu deity named Bhagavan.

Some people say he is a Magic Negro. But he is much more than that. He is a deity or an agent of a deity. People get offended because he is black and not representing black stereotypes or discrimination's, but they miss the spiritual message. Don't forget, Jesus was pretty dark himself.

reply

Hmmm, I guess maybe that would explain the lack of racism or discomfort from the crowd with him having a black caddy. I might buy that.

reply

You've got to remember that Bagger Vance actually interacts with Adele Invergordon too.

One of two things: Guardian Angel sent to save a good man. Jesus Christ walking beside him throughout his life?
Great movie!

reply

He's some sort of guardian angel with soul.

The old man dies in the end of a heart attack (at present time) and Vance waves at him by the beach, as a signal to come join him - so clearly a deity of sorts.

reply

Exactly. First Bagger Vance tells Junuh "he's always been there" and then when the old man dies at the end, he waves him in.

reply

I don't think he's actually God but maybe a representation of God in the form of an angel of God. He's not a ghost. I think he's an angel. He's definitely supernatural and not totally just a human being.

reply

He's a genie!
