Nah dude, stay away from that movie. It sucks pennies.
Especially after you've read the book, I'd say.

Never read the book but this 1999 version is fine viewing, so recommended.

The deal's this: it is always very difficult to make a good adaptation of a book, escpecially one like this (with time travel and everything). So some of the elements from the book are missing. Still, this is an adaptation I really RECOMMEND, it managed to capture the spirit of the story. The greatest weakness are the actors, some of them are simply a wrong choice (most of all Joan Plowright as Mrs Bartholomew - this character should have been played by someone much older). Apart from this, it's a great film not only for children, but also adults. I'd give it a rating of 7 out of 10.

It's rubbish. The casting is very poor. Anthony Way is seriously miscast as Tom. As a towering 14 year old he is totally unconvincing as the 10 year old Tom. Try and locate the much better 1989 BBC TV mini-series which was available on video but is now deleted. The BBC version is truer to the book and the casting is excellent (10 year old Tom is played by Jeremy Rampling who is convinving in the part). As a guide to their relative merits, the video of the BBC version regularly fetches £30.00+ on Amazon and eBay while the DVD of the movie version can be bought for less than £1.00...

Well, all I can say is that having never read the book, I found this film to be excellent. I thought Anthony Way did a fantastic job in the role of Tom. Not having the book to compare it to, I enjoyed this film very much.....several times over, as a matter of fact. Highly recommended.....

slightly disappointing but overall ok.

It's a decent adaptation, but I think it was highly unnecessary to show Tom as an adult. I didn't like the whole added angle of him watching the building get bulldozed down. Other than that, it was pretty good.
