What went wrong when Tom's brother saw them ?

I just try to figure out how the presence of Tom's brother at the tower was explained in the book, and in what way that moment made such a strong and lasting effect on young Harriet, such as never to "see" Tom again (except for the night of the thunder)! Maybe someone could explain?

In the book Peter joining in isn't really explained. If I recall correctly, it just happens because of his strong desire to join Tom in all of his adventures. So he's able to go in his dream. His presence isn't what affects Hatty. Hatty is no longer able to see Tom because she grows up, making for the poignant scene of Tom trying desperately to talk to her and Peter noting that she's a grown woman rather than a little girl.
