shareHi,
I just finshed watching April Story and wanted to know the same thing.
Well, if I enter "Nobunaga Oda" in IMDB's character search, I get only 4 movies that are old enough to correspond:
Shinobi no mono (1962)
Shirikurae Magoichi (1969)
Fûunji Nobunaga (Oda Nobunaga) (1940)
Teppo denraiki (1968)
According to the description, the first one seems to be the best match. To be sure I searched Google and found http://shinobinomono.oninohana.com/summaries/summary.php?id=snm02.

i'm not sure what movie it is, but that's definately Toshiro Mifune (i think toshiro is his first name)...i dont know if that helps narrow it down at all though, seeing as he was in EVERY movie from Japan's "golden age of cinema" ...or so it seems anyways, haha. happy searching.
shareNope, the guy's name is Masato Ibu. In certain expressions he looks exactly like Mifune, and he did a good job of imitating his style. I was completely fooled as well.

I assume that it's a movie segment made just for "April Story", notice one of the actors in the samurai film was Yosuke Eguchi - he did not appear in the actual story but in the actors list his name appeared along with the other two actors in the samurai film. Normally if a film used a segment of another film it would credit it at the end, not including the actors with the actual film's actors list.
shareNobunaga and Hideyoshi are important historical characters, so there can be plenty of movies with them.
I actually think that this segment was shot for April Story. The segment is too long to be just a quote

I figured it might be custom-made for the movie. Must say that Iwai did a fantastic job with the stylistic emulation.
shareAccording to the Japanese Wikipedia page, this is a "play within a play", and Masato Ibu is credited in the film.
