Like most politicians in the modern era, they were happy to use Frank's popularity to get votes in 1960, but they didn't want his personal life baggage to cause them embarrassment.

My guess. Sinatra's erratic behavior could be a terrible political liability, especially in the early 1960's. But I agree with the sentiment expressed on this thread.

It wasn't so much that Sinatra was "unstable" but because he had friends in the Mafia. Sinatra wasn't the kind of guy to deny he was friends with someone to save face so he didn't care if his name was linked to organized crime figures. The Kennedys were more than happy to get help winning the election from the mob but they weren't willing to let the public know that or continue to let Franks hang around.

It also didn't help matters that the Kennedys wanted to distance themselves from Sammy Davis, Jr who was marrying a white woman. Sinatra refused to skip Davis' wedding because, again, Sinatra didn't give a damn what people thought of him.

And in all truth, the Kennedys were about as liberal as Nixon. If any Kennedy was a liberal, it was Bobby Kennedy who surely didn't start off that way. I think his brother's death opened his eyes to the world to a degree. Anyone who says they were knows nothing about them.

OK. Say what you want about Sinatra. But he stuck up for those he loved. That means he stuck up for Sammy Davis Jr. Did he make jokes at his expense? Of course he did, that was his schtich. He made jokes at ALL of his friends expense, and they of him (Italian American)and visa versa. Should Sinatra have been more sensitive to Davis (African-American) and Bishop (Jewish) because of their race? OF COURSE he should have been more sensitive and politically correct. It is fortunate that we are making this observation in the 21st century. Frank and Dean and all of them loved Sammy and he loved them.

I love it that you say the Kennedy's were as liberals as Nixon. I agree, and I am a democrat! Old man Kennedy (Joe) was the biggest opportunist ever....if anyone is responsible for the fate of his sons (besides the actual criminals) it is him. "I think his brother's death opened his eyes to the world to a degree." I agree, although I would add, I think JFK's death opened Bobby's eyes as to why his brother was assassinated. And perhaps him as well.

Joe Kennedy ran the show. He used Frank to rig the primaries so his son would win. Frank and JFK were friends, but Joe called the shots, and Frank was bad for business. Plus Bobby became attorney general and they decided to go after he mafia, to buy political capital, some of which were the same people that got JFK elected. For these reasons many believe the mafia was in on the assassinations.

This is part of the greatness of The Rat Pack, its not afraid to show it like it was.
