He doesn't LOOK like sinatra, he doesn't SOUND like sinatra, and the entire time I watched it, I had to think REALLY hard to even keep in mind this was SUPPOSE to BE sinatra.
Given, Deano/SDjr impressions were great, but I thought the only thing liotta and franky had in common were the eyes.
I must agree that Liotta was the least convincing of the leads in this film, which is sad since he had the lion's share of the screen time. Liotta is a good actor, but this role was just not a good fit for him.

99% of the time a hero is someone who is too cold, tired & hungry to give a damn.
I thought he was very good in it because he is a good actor. I am pretty simple minded when it comes to bio-pics and just accept it for what it is. Anyway, the main thing that Liotta and Sinatra show to me is their confidence, slight arrogance and their leadership qualities. At least they show these traits in public.

I don't know off the top of my head who they should have cast. Phillip Casnoff was more effective as Sinatra in the CBS miniseries than Liotta was.

I don't know why they wouldn't dub over them with original recordings of the singers. I think that would have greatly aided the authenticity of the vocal performances because we're talking about voices that really can't be duplicated by other human beings, not really.

This is true. But as far as casting directors are concerned, Liotta is typecast as Italian because of his name - even before Goodfellas where he was half-Italian. I'm positive his name, as well as his fame, Jersey accent, and blue eyes, played a big part in him getting the part.

I don't think Liotta was a good choice either overall.
He acted the part well, and it looks like he honestly did his best to capture the role. In his defence, he did say this about it:
"I'm really glad I took on the challenge of playing Sinatra, as scary as it was. I learned somewhat about myself - that I could do it and I knew what was bothering me - the fears that I had."
As far as looks are concerned the "Sinatra image" is definitley not that of Ray Liotta. But this album cover caught my eye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Weesmallhours.jpeg). It's almost dead on for Liotta.
Maybe this is what the producers were looking at...

shareI think Ray did a great job in this movie! He was one of my favorite actors in the whole thing..nicely done. The scene where he walks in to the Casino in his suit, and hat, is the essential image of what I will always think of, when I think of SInatra. Same goes for the opening scene when Ray played the older Sinatra.

Really rate Liotta and a good actor doesn't have to look that much like the person they are playing to pull it off (check out Forest Whittaker as Idi Amin who is awesome even if he doesn't look that much like him).
But I never beleived he was Sinatra in this movie which was a real shame.

Ray Liotta wasn't doing an imitation of FS. He's a blue eyed Jersey guy with the same kind of charm and threatening manner as FS. Don Cheadle was physically way too tall and robust for SD Jr. He was doing a Rich Little style impression as was Mantengna. They were all good.

i agree with the OP,Liotta shouldnt be in this.He was too big physicaly to play Sinatra,and he didnt try any kind of impersonation either.

shareI watched The Rat Pack last night and I thought exactly the same thing! He didn't look a bit like Frank Sinatra! Plus I don't really like Liotta ever since I watched part of Goodfellas.
The other actors who played Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. were great. And it was nice to see Dan O'Herlihy playing Joe Kennedy.
It was a good film regardless of Liotta. Really enjoyed the music.
