What you think? How old are Joan and Keenan supposed to be? I kind of had the impression as if Keenan was much younger than Joan, because he still lived at his parents' and well Joan just seemed somehow more mature with more experiences relationship-wise.

i think that keenan has to be at least 21, maybe just barely, but if he wasn't he wouldn't be able to get into the club that him and joan frequent.

shareI had them both pegged at around 22 or 24. Paul said that his affair was 25 years ago but he didn't sleep with her. Is he lying? if not I don't see how that could have been where Joan came from. But maybe I'm just not remembering properly. I need to watch it again. I'm pretty sure that Keenan and Joan were pretty much the same age that the actors would have been at the time which was about 22.
shareShe was definitley 23 or 24. Paul established that he had a "thing" 25 years ago with Wendy. He said it was the worst YEAR of his life. Then he mentioned that Wendy left to Seattle; so that night was the night he realized that he loved Hannah and that night he came home and they "made Jo-Jo".
Or course it takes approx. nine months to make a baby (duh :p) so

Could the choice of the song at the intro be indicative of Joan's age? Remember she had the whole intro about "talking about love is like dancing about architecture"? Anyway, the song that played right after her for the opening credits was "Drinking in L.A." by Bran Van 3000. That song could be about Joan: "what the hell am I doing drinking in LA at 26?". The movies in LA, she drinks . . . . so is she 26? Juuuuuuuuuust a thought ;)

I actually didn't get that impession at all. I think what gives that illusion is their personalities. She's so bold and loud and over the top and expressive, and he's so quiet and inderstated and reserved and moody. It gives an impression of her almost upstaging him, because she's so THERE. And then this probably makes it seem like she's older, more mature, etc. I actually thought, though, that Ryan did a FANTASTIC job playing opposite her. It must have been terribly difficult to play counterpoint to such a strong character and actress, but in my opinion he pulled it off splendidly. He has just as much intensity, but in a quiet way. I think he held his own just with his eye contact. It was fabulous. I agree that Angelina was great in this movie, but I definitely think it was Joan and Keenan's story that actually MADE the movie. I would (and have) watched it again, just for that.

Joan is definitely supposed to be 23-24. I got the idea that Keenan is just a year younger than her or so. The fact that he lives with his parents plays little on his age. He is HIV+ (or something like that), so when he feels like his life is falling apart and his girlfriend dies, where does he go? He probably can't afford an appartment for himself, and is too depressed about his life-threatening illness to get a roommate. So he returns home. It makes sense.
shareI'm not really if Keenan's statement that he lives with his parents isn't just another thing to keep other people away from him - he doesn't want a relationship (or as we learn later in the movie, he doesn't want his heart to be broken again) and that might work.
Beside this, yeah, I agree that Keenan is a bit younger than Joan, maybe a year or two, but not much more.
