angelas red coat?

throughout the film, angela wears a red coat the only bright colour seen throughout the film....but what does it symbolze?! anyone know?

reply

Symbolize?
Have you read the book? Then you will know that Angela got this coat in America as a gift.
This is the only good item she owns.

reply

She got the coat in America as a gift from a relative. Gray and black are for Ireland While bright colours are for America see?

reply

RED is used to represent that Angela is the main character; a lot of emphasis is put on her using her coat.

RED also symbolizes the fact that 2 of her children died. RED = BLOOD.

reply

Angela's not the main character, while a key character, Francis, the narrator and author is the main character.

reply

throughout the movie 3 of her children died.. 1 in states and 2 in ireland

there can be only one... two... or even 3 joints per hour...lolz

reply

Please! Give me a break! Why does everything have to symbolize something? She received a red coat and wore it all the time because she couldn't afford to buy another. Plain and simple.

reply

Blerath, Angela´s red coat symbolizes nothing at all. It was red as could be green or grey or whatever. She tells the three men in Limerick who give used furniture to her that it was a handover from a cousin in Brooklyn. Donaldson

reply

the movie was a true story no fabrications....i was all true...the coat had no symbology.

reply

The coat has some symbology. It was in better than condtition than the most woemn around herel She had to explain to te charity that it was givej to her by her cousins in NY, and looked in better shape that most of the mosthers seeking charity.

reply

Just read the book! it is not symbolic..

reply

And actually, wasn't it used as a bedspread in the book? I haven't seen the movie, I don't know, but in the book, especially in the later years, she certainly wasn't wearing a nice red coat.

reply

WHile the film is based on a true story and Angela did have a red coat in real life, this in no way argues away the symbolism of the coat. Alan Parker still had to make the choice of whether or not to carry this detail over from the book and then once he made the choice to keep the red coat in the film, he had to choose what kind of red the coat would, what condition the coat would be in and a plethora of other small details about that coat. Nothing in a film simply, is. Everything you see on screen was a choice that the director or someone else made, regardless of the story being true or not. so having said that, even in the book the coat obviously held some sort of symbolism in that it was an important enough element that he put into the book. it wasnt just memory, it was an element that held a special place in the story, as a beacon of hope, as a glimpse in his child-mind to the splendor of america (as he perceived it). Returning to the film the coat was emphasized on the screen. If Alan Parker thought the bright red coat nothing more than a simple nugget of truth than he would not have specifically highlighted it, he would have let that red de-saturate into the background along with all other vibrant colours, but he didnt. I would agree with the above comment that the coat is a symbol of the hope and vibrance that young Frank associates with america. Actually this association is the only thing that makes the sappy and foreshortened ending even bearable.

not to be a completely nit-picky prick but I thought that I would mention that it is not symbology it is symbolism. Symbology is the anthropological study of symbols as used by cultures in their rituals, religion, and ever day life. Symbolism is the use of a symbol in art to elicit a deeper meaning and understanding.

cheers,

read the book! its has nothing to do with anything!!!! its the only piece of clothing she owns that was in good shape!!! minus a dress that she keeps in a trunk! (in the book anyway)

You thinking the whip was the worse I could do? That was foreplay.

reply

I have read the book and I think that it does symoblize something. I think it said that things, in a way, are a lot better in America. Maybe it could say that she has been out of Ireland.
