Ray didnt own the land anymore

Yes, that made no sense when the TV-movie first aired. I think they thought most of the audience wasn't watching the later seasons or forgot that plot twist. The funny thing is though they included Carter McKay in both TV seasons and his original storyline was buying Ray's ranch and starting a range war with Southfork. I guess it's possible that Michelle eventually sold the ranch back to Ray in the intervening years.
