See the 1980 version first!

The 1998 adaptation throws you into the story without enough context or setup. Everything that happens therefore has much less weight or logic. To fully appreciate (and understand) the story, see the 1980 version first. They give you the necessary backstory and set up the world well. They also nail the tone of the story better than this version. Not to mention the ending.
