peter jackson?

reply

lol, he's a new zealander... but maybe they were thinking of baz luhrman (spelling?) because he has done moulin rouge, romeo and juliet and strictly ballroom, all of which were brilliant movies!

annnd... i was just wondering what people from outside australia consider the best australian movie. because i would think it is two hands (only because i loved it) but some people might think others like chopper or japanese story. or something completely different. just wondering.

reply

yeah 'two hands' for me too - its my favourite movie full stop!

reply

Two Hands was great, but Chopper was awesome!!! Most embarrasing that Australia churned out was Hating Alison Ashley and the whole Delta epidemic, urhhh.

reply

get the f--k out of here, it so does not beat those movies, ofcourse its a bloody great film, i bet ya no yank or pom would get all those jokes in there, thats why its not as good as pulp or snatch, those movies are more broad with thier humour, just because we got the jokes more and we could relate to it, i dont think its better than them tho

reply

yes this was a pretty good movie
but u gotta admit that it does have its poor *beep*
take for example the guy who steals acko's car
when he tries to sell it he steals the dars (cigarettes) belonging to the guy working there
absolute *beep* poor *beep*

reply

Another good Aussie movie you want to check out is Gettin' Square. Chopper was excellent, while if you're looking for a laugh, Crackerjack and Bad Eggs in recent years are good.

The problem with Aussie movies is they don't write stories about Aussies, instead going for the generic crap that just bombs at the box office. The four I've listed above and Two Hands are stories about Aussies, and thats why they were successful.

Why do I fall in love with every woman I see who shows me the least bit of attention? - Joel Barish

reply

The Road Warrior anyone?

And who was that nonce saying daft nonsense like Dead Poets' Society is Australian just because Peter Weir is an Aussie?
Why, that would make Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator, True Romance, The Last Boy Scout, and most startlingly G.I. Jane all British movies.
Leon, The Fifth Element, The Assassin and Taxi would all be French then.

reply

Yes, this is one of the superior Australian films.. There have been some real stinkers.. I am hoping that all the talented small film directors come out of their hidey holes (I know quite a few talents) and start getting their stuff out there.. We aren't a bunch of BBQ loving, stubby short wearing bogans.. Really, we aren't

"Hey don't knock masturbation, it's sex with someone I love" - Woody Allen

reply

Yes, I agree that there have been some less-than-perfect examples of Australian cinema, but think of all the stinkers that other countries have churned out too. We notice the Aussie stinkers more because there are less Aussie films to look at in the first place - classic illusory correlation!

There's no doubt that 'Two Hands' is an excellent film though. I love the totally unashamed 'boganness' of it.

Other interesting and fairly edgy Aussie films for those who might be interested include "Kiss or Kill" and "Chopper". There are many more though...

*And who was that nonce saying daft nonsense like Dead Poets' Society is Australian just because Peter Weir is an Aussie?*

I understand what you're saying here, but why would you brand someone a nonce just because of that? Not only is that a very strong label to throw about, it's a dangerous rumour to start about someone, especially when, like this, it appears to be completely groundless.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is widely considered as the greatest within the Australian film industry, and I couldn't agree more.

reply

Picnic at Hanging Rock was pretty good. Mad me think and analyse.
Enjoying Two Hands right now.
Learning new words like "bogan"
I love the way Australians talk.

If you like Two Hands you ought to check out Dirty Deeds. Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, John Goodman and Toni Collette. I laughed my head off watching Dirty Deeds.

Hey, why hasn't anyone mentioned Priscilla: Queen of the Desert yet? I thought this was one of our finest, and most well known films!

reply

The Interview is the best Aussie film. In fact it's my favourite film, ever.

Blue Murder isn't far behind.

Then Gallipoli.

Then Two Hands.

Two Hands is a very entertaining film.

Definatley the best aussie film ever. We have a pretty shockin film industry, but every now and then we release a gem like this one or Wolf Creek. Probably the best thing about them is the realism. Especially in Two Hands, the way Jimmy and Alex interract is pretty awkward and shy, not like the classical hollywood instant raport that the main love story protaganists seem to share. It's also very true to the underworld which is very rarely seen in crime films. No fancy mafia crims, no illusions of immortality, just very honest and realistic.

reply

one reason I love Two Hands is that, as an earlier post said, it has everything - action, romance, comedy, drama, a "message".
and the dialogue is brilliant - not just because it's so authentically Australian, but it's so naturalistic. Jimmy and Alex sound so inane 'So what are you up to?' 'Nothing much. You?' etc (that's from memory, probly not word for word) - so far from the snappy dialogue of American teen or action movies. and despite how inarticulate and awkward they are with each other, they communicate really well.
and I just love the moment when Jimmy's taking a photo of Alex, and she's embarrassed and giggly, until he says 'well, do something' and she just stares into the distance and becomes so still and sad and beautiful, and he's mesmerised.

Mr Universe: Mal? Guy killed me with a sword, Mal. How weird is that?

Do you know if I can get this in the US or on a region 1 DVD, or was it only released over in Australia?

reply

It was released back in December, probably due to Heath Ledger's recent popularity.

Its one of the better movies, but there are plenty that are better: Gallipoli, Mad Max 1 and 2 (Road Warrior) and Crocodile Dundee 1 & 2, Dead Calm, The Proposition, Strictly Ballroom and The Piano are all better films.
