6 out of 10 Are you JOKING!

Pretentious and disgraceful. This would be by far the worst movie released in 2000 {UK} were it not for What Lies Beneath.

Both got 1/10 from me but this wins by a whisker as the worst movie of that year from the worst Harrison Ford movie ever made.

England's not burning, it's burnt

I agree about the 1/10. Movie was terrible.

reply

I agree that this story was poorly laid out and also that I, too, am stunned that it rated so highly. These filmmakers put no effort into this project at all. I think the only effort they applied was in hiring all the people to vote at IMDb.

well to each their own. i like this movie

I hate Reality shows, thats not reality!

reply

I like this movie as well. I have no idea why some people say it's 'so bad' etc.

reply

Excellent production values!
Good acting.
Excellent photography.
Good story telling.
Good soundtrack.

Intriguing message!

I don't believe in any of the gods, but the church has always profited from ignorance and it's clear to me that they might stop at nothing to protect their power (just look at history; war on science and decent).

I can imagine lots of reasons why some people may not like it:

- A threat to their religious beliefs
- No nudity (I'm sure some guys feel cheated)
- Atheists have a tendency to hate all things religious

I just finished watching again (seen it about three times in the past 8 years - and I think it just as powerful now).

reply

Excellent photography?

I'm guessing you meant cinematography. Which isn't too spectacular in this film. I'm not sure what about the cinematography you felt was so excellent. I didn't see any shots or angles that were all that impressive.

Sad story. You got a smoke?

reply

I agree on your assessment/summation---strong film front(cinematic technique) to back(subject); the story has plenty of depth, and provokes questions all should be self-reflexive about: faith should be a broad/embracing/inclusive way(versus a narrowing/rules-laden "path", as many try to sell).

Maybe you have to be Catholic to enjoy it. Other Christians would see it as pure fantasy because there is nothing Biblical to back up any of the events as being even remotely holy since God never used such things as evidence of His approval. To prove Jesus was the Messiah, He had his Holy Spirit appear in the form of dove. To prove who were His disciples in ancient times, he gave them the power speak in tongues and to heal the sick as Jesus did. He never used violent images, Mary or anyone elses faces on sides of buildings (or butterflies, rusty screendoors, monkey butts, etc), "stigmata" or bleeding statues to prove anything.

Under our clothes, we are all naked!

reply

What are you talking about? Did you even watch the movie? Where do you think the stigmata was coming from? God? Jesus?

God nor Jesus was never even hinted at being responsible for what was going on with her...but rather, a lot of other hocus pocus stuff every day Christians believe in was.

I started to explain it out and thought...why a I giving this idiot the answers? If you have any intelligence you can watch it again and pay attention this time.

reply

He never used violent images

Can I just point out what he did to the money changers?

I keep seeing your comments on this thread and taking screenshots of your witty sass. You must be great at parties (no sarcasm).

reply

I agree with your assessment, AccidntlTourist. This film and its message is a threat to the dogmatic beliefs of many. It's a very powerful indictment of the hypocrisy of organized religion. Also, Patricia Arquette's performance, in particular, was absolutely amazing and completely believable, which was quite a feat. I can't even imagine how any lesser an actress could have pulled it off.

reply

Are you joking? This was a good film. Even if you thought the story was stupid, don't you give them any credit for the acting or the cinematography or anything?

Tomorrow's just your future yesterday!

Anyone who would give this movie a 1 out of 10 has no concept of cinematic criticism. Story in a film is only part of the criteria for review - albeit a very large part. For example, the story of a film may be lacking, but the cinematography, the direction and the acting may elevate the movie's quality. The cinematography of this film is excellent, as are the performances by Arquette and Byrne and the music by Corgan. No one can say that the music is a "1", nor could one say the acting or the cinematography of the film deserve a "1", therefore to give this film a "1" is quite absurd.

reply

EXACTLY Bladerunner! It peeves me to no end when people rate movies as "1" simply because they didn't like it. Even movies I HATED I rarely gave "1", because usually there's at least one or two positive factors about the movie, like cinematography, musical score, an understated performance, etc.

We're the A.P.B, and this thread is officially crashed.

should be 2 outta 10

I loved both this movie and "What Lies Beneath." What's good for one person doesn't have to be good for everyone. Watch what you like.

BIH Michael Jackson. The world is a little safer for kids now.

reply

I agree. I really liked this movie AND What lies beneath. As I have said before, it's a MOVIE. If you like it fine. If you don't like it fine. That does not mean it's bad. It just means YOU don't like it. Gabriel and Patricia are fine actors.I don't beleive in critics and never have. I have both movies on DVD. I am also going to get a DVD of Stigmata that is in better condition than the one I have, and with the extras.I like the music too and the song and video by Natalie Imbruglia.I love movies and have a large collection of all kinds.

Not the best movie ive seen. But I would have rated it 5-6 out of 10.
What drops it, is the obvious holes in the storyline though. But I kinda liked the aspect of religion it had.

I dont disagree at all, with the religious point of view of the movie. After all, I am a danish protestant (which most likely is very different from protestants in North and South America). I do not really have any firm belief in God. But I have a lot of respect for Protestantism. The belief, that the relationship between God and every man does not need a middle link. And also that praying every day, giving coins to the poor, helping those less fortunate or even devoting yourself to God completely, wont secure your way into heaven. The belief, that ONLY through Gods mercy, will you go to heaven.. is to me, very intriguing. If you, as a human.. cant do anything (AT ALL) to gain acces to heaven, then what are you left with? Will you then still strive to be a good person?

Most cultures and religion has rituals of some kind, that are required by the religion itself.. most often to secure your soul / essence after your demise. Protestantism doesnt have this.. when youve sinned, you dont go cleanse yourself through confession in a church. As a protestant, you can speak to God when you need to, and hope that he listens and has mercy on you.

The religious conviction of the movie, seemed to me, a lot like protestantism. And I myself sympathize with it.

Not the best movie, but it was OK imo.

PS: Atleast we protestants do not have so many priests going pedofile driven by celibacy. :P (Hope that doesnt poke too many flames)

reply

4/5 at best. The actors did a stellar job but the story itself missed the mark.

Well, we're talking about the biggest plot holes there is, religion. No wonder it has plot holes when it is based on a plot hole to start with.

Otherwise I thought it was a completely OK film. The acting was good, the visuals was more than just good, they were excellent. The story, well. As an atheist myself it doesn't do anything for me, but I love folklore, fairy-tales, mythology and so on, and that is basically what the story has to stand on so the it was interesting to me from a storytelling fashion (not a religious fashion).

True. I'm agnostic and I've enjoyed this film since I first watched it (when I was a Christian). I live in a highly Christian-concentrated area and discuss religion with those who hold it sacred. Watching this movie and looking up the Gospel of St Thomas is giving me more material to work with to ask questions and receive feedback. Not sure if they want to change my mind (will not happen), but I just enjoy the conversation (and amusement). This was executed decently in many respects.
