Ralph Fiennes' characters....

I think it's interesting that in 1993 Ralph portrayed one of the most sadistic Nazi's to have ever been depicted on film, Amon Goeth, then six years later plays the polar opposite, set roughly at the same time.

Only an actor of Ralph's calibre could pull off such a feat. An absolutely intriguing and talented actor. Truly one of the best of his generation.

wrong. in both films he played a dull egocentric fool

To add to your post, Gabe -- While I don't know the story behind the casting of the movie, I've always assumed the reason (or, one of the reasons) Ralph was cast in the leads was because he did not want to be known only as "the Nazi from Schindler's List." In other words, he wanted to play victims of anti-Semitism, too. Again, I have no idea whether or not there's any truth in this; it's a speculation of mine is all.

Actually, that might very well be the reason he took the role. Maybe to challenge himself to see if he can play the opposite. Playing the two roles convincingly would definitely take a very talented actor, that's for sure. I mean, sure, a lot of actors, especially character actors, take all kinds of roles, but to be a costar of one and the star of another that have roles be polar opposites...that takes talent.
