I really liked it too. It was a reasonable update and the wife thing was less of a distraction than I thought it would be. When it started I thought the heavy handed music was going to sink it but it subsided quick enough.
Where I really think they went right was the depiction of the era. It felt like the early sixties without all of the gimmicks you usually see in period pieces. The dialog was respectful of the era too without all of the rat-a-tat-tat pacing of older noir films. Caan played it just weary enough that you could almost buy into his anxiety without cringing. Also, no super hero exploits or eye rolling car chases.
Making this today it would be a totally visual film with little of the adherence to the story at hand. And speaking of the story it had plenty of twists and characters, but you could follow the action without wondering what you missed.
