I rather like this updated P.Marlowe saga.

Also i like Caan as the hard bitten P.I.-whom i personally don't like in general as a rule;

It is Noir to be sure,and it has the right tone for me to revisit this film from time to time.

Additionally,Keith & Cox are right on as well ....

The movie holds up tremendously:

-cast

-twists'n turns

-quite dark and sinister(edgy)

-Like Dina

-the feel is '63

-fine music

-surprises abound

I haven't read any of Raymond Chandler's novels and the only Marlowe movies I've seen are 'The Big Sleep' and 'Lady of the Lake' so I'm not really very knowledgeable about the character or the books. As such, I enjoyed the movie on its own merits and being a big fan of neo-noir, this didn't disappoint at all.

Chandler and Marlowe fans don't seem to like it though.

I really liked it too. It was a reasonable update and the wife thing was less of a distraction than I thought it would be. When it started I thought the heavy handed music was going to sink it but it subsided quick enough.

Where I really think they went right was the depiction of the era. It felt like the early sixties without all of the gimmicks you usually see in period pieces. The dialog was respectful of the era too without all of the rat-a-tat-tat pacing of older noir films. Caan played it just weary enough that you could almost buy into his anxiety without cringing. Also, no super hero exploits or eye rolling car chases.

Making this today it would be a totally visual film with little of the adherence to the story at hand. And speaking of the story it had plenty of twists and characters, but you could follow the action without wondering what you missed.

Eh, it was okay.
