great doc

people who are only familiar with his kinski films should check out his docs like lessons of darkeness, fata morgana or this film.

There are some very powerful images and insights in this documentary (the bear in particular-and now especially poignant when compared with the bears in Grizzly Man). I thought Herzog was more objective in the the making of this documentary than usual. Dieter's story was compelling enough on its own that Herzog basically left it alone, and let Dieter tell the story.

I watched it with my father, a Vietnam veteran. There are very few films about that era that he finds acceptable, but this is one. Actually it is the only one-Full Metal Jacket he liked, but only the first half.

yes, an AMAZING, moving & haunting film.
(to be honest I've yet to see a Werner Herzog movie that isn't)

It is very interesting to hear about your father! I mean, he and other veterans should know, shouldn't they?

Yes, great film indeed! And yes, there are so many other ones by Herzog too. I would add "Grizzly Man" to the ones you mention and it shouldn't be that hard to find either.
