I started watching this movie knowing I'd heard this story before. Ignorantly I checked IMDB only to remember it was the doc that Raising Dawn was based up. I thought the story through Deiter's words and Hertzog's narration was many times more affecting and a better overall story. I almost feel like Raising Dawn cheapened the story. Left nothing to the imagination like Deiter's documentary did.

I agree 100%. I like Rescue Dawn if only because more people have discovered this documentary because of it.

I watched Dieter needs to fly/Rescue Dawn back to back one evening. Really thoroughly enjoyable, however the doc is surely the more accomplished film. It's in fact very interesting to note how Herzog chose to adapt the story and the Rescue Dawn 'Making of' featurette was really revealing. A treat for Herzog fans.

Rescue Dawn is a terrific movie, but this is one of those instances where nothing can really compete with the telling of the story direct from the source.

Agreed, much better mainly because of the man himself. What a guy.
