Do you think the movie would have worked if the 'outcast' character of Rachel had been male?
I don't think a male "Carrie" would work because moviegoers don't sympathise with male 'victims' the same way they sympathise with female ones.

Nope. Female leads work better in horror films. Male leads don't usually work very well. For example: A Nightmare on Elm Street 2

I don't think it would have worked. During the humiliation scenes he'd have come off as a whinny puss who just needs to stand up for himself. Than when he snaps and kills everyone at the end he'd have come off more like the way the media portrayed those Columbine kids.

it would be ridiculous to claim that either the original carrie film or book insisted upon a rule that telekinetic powers are only available to females. There's no real or justified authority... and even if there was? This is fantasy/horror! You can create whatever adjustment you want. You can rewrite the rules, this isn't reality.
Also, this movie sucks.
I thought you said rachel was a man and i was seriously thinking about it. She could be a hermaphrodite.
