Christian perspective

Hi. I was wondering, I am a Christian, and I like clean, appropriate movies. Would this movie be known as that? Is there anything like nudity or or inappropriate that I should worry about? Swear words included. Thanks.

Well...let's put it this way:

If you are concerned about sheltering yourself from the realities of life, i.e. death, passion, hatred, murder, assult, greed, jealousy, lust, poverty, classism, and deception, then this production is not for you. But then, a lot of the Bible and the very life which Christ led would not be for you either. It bemuses me the so many of the followers of a savior who spent his life and ministry amongst the tax collectors and sinner cannot bear to acknowledge that these realities exist--and let's not even mention sullying themselves by interacting with such base creatures. Didn't he say something about being "in the world, but not of it"?

But anyway, enough of my personal soapbox. No, no nudity beyond a bit of period costume cleavage, and not more than a couple "damn's" or "bloody 'ell's" that I can remember. I would personally recommend it to anyone over the age of say, 10-12 (and that is more because of the long attention span which this adaptation requires than anything).

Thank you very much. I have seen some bad movies, and I just am not interested in them. They cloud my mind with bad images. With the cleavage thing, that is in Pride and Prejudice (BBC version) but I absolutley love that movie! So I was just talking about the main bad images. Thank you again for your input.

Hey I juts watched this movie a few days ago..
there is one scene of rear nudity in the movie. towards the end
Nothing vulgar..

I know. I saw that and was like "Ok, this is weird". But I am just happy that that was the only scene. Still. You wonder why they had to go that far down on the screen just for us to see that. It didn't need to be put in there. Oh well.

What's weird about it?

hey look, just because there are bad things out there doesnt mean we have to reval in them. (which this movie does not) but just because, say a guy goes insain kills tons of people in horrible ways, does that make it okay to sit through a whole movie of it? i accept some bad, because it is real and why try to hide from the truth. but that dose not mean Jesus went to watch a show at the colissium. "be in the world, but not of it." shure have dinner with a sinner so that you can be a testimony, but be diferent, and watch things that build you up and have good morals, stories, and answers.

You have missed the point. Just because a believer says that they don't want to see a movie showing the sins of the world doesn't mean that the person is not acknowledging that these things exist. if we denied these things exist, we wouldn't be asking if they were in the movie!!! in order to ask about them, we automatically acknoweldge their existence. When a person gives up drinking, i don't think they want to hang around people who drink. i believe that they understand that continuing to hang with those who drink will not support their decision not to drink. i think you can apply that reasoning to many areas of life - including sin. if you're a Christian who has decided that he's done with sin, there's absolutely no reason to see movies that include it to a large degree. there's no such thing as a movie that shows no sin, but everyone has a right to choose not to see certain movies for whatever reason. it doesn't make them idiots. not only do movies show a great deal of the seedy-type sins, the name of the Lord is often used as a by-word, a curse word, an empty word. there's no need to subject ourselves to these things.

Well, there are some drowned bodies, but nothing graphic. There is also a shot of Bradley Headstone at the river bathing which shows his entire bare backside. I'm a Christian myself, and (perhaps other than that shot) I didn't find it offensive. Of course, the tone is darker than, say, "Pride and Prejudice," but there are many sweet moments, and the overall message points towards love triumphs over money, goodness, triumphs over evil.

reply

What's offensive about a bare backside - in a Christian sense or otherwise? It's just the backside that God gave you, why be ashamed of it? It's nature.

reply

Of course it's natural, and not offensive in itself. It's just something that should be private, not shown... freely. I just prefer modesty and I guess was a little surprised at that shot, that's all.

I too am a Christian and I can tell you I really love this movie. It was very well done, like most BBC movies are - Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth! - and followed the book word for word in some places. The butt part was wierd cuz it was not needed, but it was from far off so mostly you just see a splotch of white.

Charles Dickens what a way with words, such a turn of phrase, how he would of relished the following critique "The butt part was wierd cuz it was not needed"....

I would generally recommend straightforward Dickens adaptations (e.g., the 2005 version of Bleak House, the 1994 version of Martin Chuzzlewit, but not the most recent TV adaptation of Oliver Twist, which departed from the plot and spirit of the novel). Dickens' work is invariably entertaining but also of moral value, and he touches on subjects such as hypocrisy and greed. He gives you something to cry about, something to laugh about, someone to hiss at, and someone to cheer on.

Our Mutual Friend has multiple love stories to enjoy and in the end celebrates friendship, family, and marriage.

I wouldn't be put off by the brief scene of nonsexual nudity, either. In fact, I was jolted by the mention of it above; it's certainly not the predominant image I took away from the story! But having lived in America and Europe, I find that nudity is generally a lot more controversial than violence in the former.

Stamp out silly threads! How many "so-and-so looks just like so-and-so" discussions do we need?

I'm a christain as well!
and although i could have done wit out the nude scene, it only lasted for about two seconds and it was from far away.

Approximately at what point in the mini-series (time wise) is this scene shown? I would like to know so I can preview it for children.

reply

Hi. I've been reading some of your previous messages because it seems that we have the same taste in programs as well as the ECD tunes heard in them! (I'm learning a lot from your posts!)

Anyhow, the scene in question appears near the end of the miniseries, but I can't recall exactly which chapter it's in. Bradley Headstone (played by David Morrissey) bathes in the river. You can see his buttocks. He's completely nude, but you only see him from the back.

However, the reason he is bathing is due to a very disturbing (violent) scene that takes place a bit before the nude bathing scene. You should DEFINITELY preview that scene before showing it to your children.

It's a perfect movie for Christians. You'll absolutely love it. Your whole family could watch and enjoy it. It's on Youtube if you want to check it out for free.
