*ESSAY* My Problems with Barney

My Problems with Barney

Just to let you know, I have nothing against most children’s shows, just this one.

Barney is what I think is wrong with the world today. Some of you may ask “What is wrong with a kiddy friendly and educational show?” Well, I can list a few things.

First off Barney is said to be an educational show that helps aid children in development. However, if you watch further, not only is Barney just made for “selling out” to little ones, it also teaches some rather harzardous lessons. These hazardous lessons are the way that the Lyon’s Group does not deliver a realistic view of life, but with a sugar coated, politically correct view of life, where negativity and problems should not exist. This also leads to the sugar coating of fairy tales and history as well, which is very unhealthy indeed. Now G Rated means “Barney rated”. That is sad, isn’t it. It is almost like telling kids that the nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has never happened. And the sad thing is, kids are eating up all of that. Protecting kids is good, but giving them only a PC and sugar coated view of life is unhealthy.

Dr. Lisa Korman, a child psychologist researches the fact that ‘Using denial as a primary coping strategy, means in stark contrasts to PBS classics like “Sesame Street”, “Lambchop’s Play Along” and “Mr Roger’s Neighborhood”, “Barney” does NOT help children learn to tolerate sorrowful or stressful situations’.

And she is right. Before you flame me, here are some example of the situations handled on the show:

• Kathy is feeling sad and jealous because, unlike her friends, she has no siblings or father (perhaps she mentioned that her dad has died). "Oh, Kathy," Barney promptly responds in a loving yet chiding voice, "you have a mother and grandmother who love you very much. That’s a wonderful-size family!"

• Tina woefully announces, "I’m having a really bad day." Immediately, Barney replies, "Well, I think your day will get much better now that we’re all together!" And her older sister Luci says just moments later, "Try not to worry..., Tina. Maybe if we sang a happy song, you’d feel better!"

• Barney trips on a toy and crashes to the floor. He is down on the ground, but still is laughing and is happy as if nothing has happened.

• Kathy is scared to visit the doctor and get a shot. Barney immediately tries to convince her that there’s nothing to be afraid of. He becomes "Dr. Barney" and when Kathy gets her make-believe shot, she exclaims, "You’re right! That didn’t hurt too much!" As the show concludes, Barney asks, "Now, are you still scared to visit the real doctor?" When a jubilant, incredulous Kathy replies, "I’m not scared!", Barney and gang explode with cheers.

• Shawn looks at his easel in dismay and says, "I’m not a very good painter." Luci replies, "Oh, I wouldn’t say that, Shawn." Moments later, Barney says, "Luci’s right, Shawn. Your painting of me is terrific! You’re a wonderful artist!"

• Tina accidentally drops some records and they shatter on the floor. "I’m sorry!" she exclaims. "That’s okay," says Barney, "I’ll take care of it." "But how?" Tina asks woefully. "With a little imagination..." he replies, and the broken pieces magically become one big record.

Here is how it really should be handled (as is handled on most good children’s shows):

• When Kathy is depressed about her family, Barney can say, "I guess it’s lonely without a Dad or a brother or sister."

• When Tina announces, "I’m having a really bad day," Barney can say, "Please tell me about it."

• When Kathy is afraid to visit her doctor, Barney can say, "Thank you for telling me. What scares you the most?" And when Kathy gets her make-believe shot, she can say, "Barney, it did hurt, but only for a second."

• When Shawn says, "I’m not a very good painter," he can be told, "You know, sometimes we don’t like our picture but we can still like painting."

• When Tina accidentally broke the records, Barney could have helped in a creative manner, you know, without magic.

• Last but not least, when Barney crashes to the floor, he can say, "That really hurt!" without smiling and laughing. At least it shows that he is really hurt and not just joking about it.

Barney could have been a good and believable show for both children and adults to watch, but it wasn’t. Its purpose was just for merchandising reasons and covering up reality. There are much better programs for children out there, if you look hard enough. Or better yet, read to your children. Read them stories how they originally were, instead of giving them the syndicated “sugar-coated” material.

In other words, do not give into Barney or any show imitating it. It will not do you nor your kids any good. You will probably thankful for it once you open your eyes and get a better view of things. Life is lovely, and importantly, life is too short to give into a TV company that pretends to care about children, but really care about money and encourages the use of TV and computers as a babysitter (Which we know is not right).

Angel Meiru, you are so x1000 right!and so are you Billy_Bong. I agree with everything you guys said!
Barney is ignoring all the not-so-good things and no matter what it HAS to be all good! Barney will teach nothing if everything is all happy and magical and smiley-fun stuff. If it is, then he will probably someday go crazy because of way too much joy,and he won't have anything to say because he hasn't learned anything worth telling about.
THIS SHOW SUCKS ASS!!

That's the problem with some people, some adults think kids will be very affected by the truth of many things, but don't they know they will be even more affected and perhaps disillusioned if they learn the truth as they grow?! They might even become rebellious saying that everything I was taught was a lie! The truth hurts, but you have to know it, otherwise you can't be free, the truth shall set you free!

I dunno.

I watched it when I was a kid. I don't consider myself too messed up because it it (???). It was a decent show with some good morals in it, despite some of that "sugary" stuff. Besides, kids are watching so many shows aimed at them today, they're bound to get the right morals from one show or another.

Actually back in sixth grade-- Iwas curious about all the
Barney fussing since I never watched it before, so I
watched an episode to see if the complaints were
true...inded I never watched it again.. although
I did look up a song on the net that was on Barney
called "If All The Rain Drops"..

Joe Scruggs also sings "If All
The Rain Drops"... it sounds
more professional and not that
syrypy music that accompanies on Barney...

In fact, I wonder if the guy
who plays the voice of Barney
regrets having played him....
he must have been desperate
for work, and was the only
acting job he could find,
yet it also was a job
he really did not want..

Like my job, I have a job
that I'm very qualified for,
and although I excel at it,
I really don't like the people I
work with, but I stick with it..

I bet it's the same with Barney-
or the guy who played him...

I checked out the man who plays
Barneys' website -

He is a professional actor who
is credited under many names,
and is part of the Miscelaneous
Crew on a few TV shows I watch...

Dude, that was freakin' awesome! I've been waiting for years for someone to write something like that. You're right about the realism issues, and considering that even "Sesame Street" and "The Incredibles" dealt with death, "Barney" seems outdated. And he's just plain annnoying.
I'm not dead yet!

I totally agree with everything esp. the example about the girl's father. I mean that is like saying that her father is replacable, when, of course, no one is. I've never liked Barney. It teaches you that all "bad" (i.e. - sadness, fear, anger) feelings should be banished and hidden away. That's a dangerous message.

I don't think it was teaching her that her father was replacable only that she had other family members who cared for her. Her not having a father does not make her any less than anyone else because while he father might be dead she still has a functioning family. Really all this hate for Barney is really stupid in my opinion.

Dont say anything at all... All songs that u can find in the show are annoying!!!

And dont let ur children watch this tho, it doesnt help kids to tolerate stressful situations at all, and also, kids in the age of 12 already beginning to have stress.

And heres a verse including for those "fans" to read it:

Psalms 101:3 I shall set no wicked thing before my eyes; I hate the work of them that turn aside, it shall not cleave onto me.

And those fans who want to flame me, go ahead.

But what about this show? Of course, all the characters in this show is only happy. It tells people who are angry or mad is a bad person, that is indeed a deadly message.

I hate Barney as much as the next guy but this whole thing is stupid

Boo,hoo Barney doesn't teach about real problems but so what. I put up with problems like that in my own life. the last thing Iwant to do is watch them on t.v. I watch T.v to relax and escape the worrys of everyday life.

No I don't have that much experience, but shouldn't it be the parents job to teach kids life lessons. Who wants their kids to be raised by the television.

I had to agree with all the posters comments and rants about this show.

And yeah I agree with jaws-3D. People who wants their kids raised by the teletvision is bad for them. Luckily for me tho, I didnt grow up watching Barney, but the last time I was watching with my cousins, I shrugged my shoulders, knowing that this show is dangerous.

I better off watch other shows like seasme street and movies like Land Of The Dead.

I just want to say that you made a great essay. You responded to the events without going overboard.

you saying that this show is sugar coated and made children believe in magical stuff that is not true. Then I can say the same about fairy tales, tooth fairy, Santa (don 't tell me that you still believe in Santa). The thing is, this show target children and teach them to love their families and all the other simple stuff, it's not for you an adult to analyze it, childhood is a magical time, let the children have all the fun they suppose to have with all the disney movies and other crap. I grew up in a poor family, I never get Christmas present, I have to work to help my family since early age, I never have any of those magical stuff, so just let kids enjoy it while they can.

reply

Very impressive essay, I very much agree; I mean if you want to protect your kids you can't do it by lying to them, you're only doing that just *beep* up your kid's life; show them the truth whether it's painful or sad but who cares? Besides, you don't need Barney or some other bullsh!t PBS show to teach you anything, to teach your kids something they need human contact from parents.

If I can mix Code Lyoko, Anime, Freddy, Jason, Alien, Predator, Marvel and DC together.

reply

That was like the worst essay ever...how old are you? 10? If you turn that piece of crap in, you'll fail

reply

Really? I thought it was quite good.

I don't like Barney for those reasons as well. It's just not a good message for kids. Kids need to learn to deal with real life, not be shielded from it. I prefer good kids' shows like Big Comfy Couch, Puzzle Place, Lambchop's Play Along and Mr. Rogers.
