What exactly is wrong with this show?

This show is not even for children past 4 or 5, so why are so many people bashing it? My 15 month old can't take his eyes off the screen. I hope that by 4 or 5 Barney is beneath him, but if not, I will force the issue then.

Anyway, point is, 1 year olds are mesmerized, great show, keeps him busy..what more could a parent ask for but a little peace and quiet.

Because society likes to blame everyone but themselves that the world is constantly changing like it does. People don't realise their tastes change, so when they realise children's TV is different to what it was so many years ago, they take it out on programs like Barney.

I can understand if people don't like it for being simplistic and maybe annoying to some, but the bashing this show gets has always been ridiculous. Personally, I've been a huge fan of this show all my life (mainly for nostalgia), so I understand how annoying the Barney bashing is. Trust me, I've been teased left and right because of it (in the past), but that didn't stop me from liking the show (However, I keep it a bit of a secret for the most part).

Anyway, my point is that I agree that this show gets more bashing than it should.

Oh, and hopefully you won't consider me a creep for liking this show, despite being WAY past the age of its target audience.

1 year old's shouldn't be watching tv.

Barney doesn't teach kids anything! All Barney does is singing and dancing around.

It does!
Manners, Cleaning up after yourself, Sharing, Caring, Animals, Love, Hidden Talents, etc.

It's weird but I still watch Barney (the older ones) at 3.00 in the morning because I still love that show. The songs are really catchy! lol.

It emphasizes being kind to one another. There is nothing wrong with that message. My niece loved this show when she was little. Sometimes she still wants to watch it. I think it's because of the nostalgia. I see nothing wrong with kids liking the show. The shows many positive messages for children. It certainly beats having a child watch violent cartoons which teach nothing at all.

Also some of the songs such as, apple and bananas, are great for helping preschool children develop necessary pre-reading skills. That doesn't mean, however, that I think children should sit all day in front of a television. That's not healthy for children or adults.

Honesty I think folks just want to present themselves as being more macho so they bash Barney. I understood this when I was in fourth or fifth grade but the fact that adults bash the show to is surprising to me.

Kids seem to still enjoy it, I enjoyed it for awhile when I was little, whats the big deal?

a message board for this show exists and you expect people not to bash it???? LOL!

Because it puts too much emphasis on being happy all the time. It never acknowledges negative feelings. If someone on the show were to be feeling upset, they won't ask them what the reason is, they'll just stuff it under the rug and force them to be happy.

What bothers me about the show most is probably the way it uses existing tunes and puts in new words. That feels like sacrilege to me.

However, I think you also hit a second big issue for me. Right now, I'm watching an episode about pets. Kenneth's rabbit has disappeared. He looks a little sad, and Barney tells him not to worry, and they burst into song. Sure, the part of the message that looking for solutions is better than morose worrying is an excellent one, but the negative emotions really should be more sincere and reflective. And their "solution" for finding the bunny is to put on bunny ears and carry carrots and hop around, because the missing rabbit will think they're fellow rabbits and try to be friends. What an unrealistic solution (and, since it's Barney, it worked).

No negative feelings on Barney? I take it you never watched the show. I watch it with my foster son and I've seen them tough on anger as well as sadness. Sesame Street, which caters to a slightly older crowd, even broached the subject of death. I have no problem with the show. It shows different children interacting and it even touches on different cultures. In 3 different episodes, they showed the kids about Lebanon, Mexico, and China(this episode also touched on anger). I think it's wonderfully done.

My major problem with Barney is that it treats kids like they're idiots.

THIS IS THE BEST DAMN THING YOU'LL EVER SEE.

Why are you putting an infant in front of a TV? Children should not have any screen time until they are at least 3 years old. Try actually interacting with him instead of dumping him off in front of the idiot box.

I think because so many of us are from the Sesame Street, 321 Contact, Reading Rainbow generation...Barney came out of nowhere with sappy, everyone loves me crap. No, not everyone likes you. It's life..lol

Come on, Franklin! It'll be a fun trip!
