I'm sure my opinion will not bode well...

But I have to say, I was disappointed with this film. Now don't get me wrong; I am a big fan of foreign cinema, and when I travelled the Europe, I made a point to see a few films in France in the native tongue and all, and there are quite a few Japanese films that I absolutely adore.

That said, I just didn't find myself captured by this film. I liked parts of the cinematography, I liked the scenery, I loved the essential IDEA of a man finding a woman on the verge of suicide and then taking her to be his target in his knife-throwing act, but somehow, it just didn't connect with me.

I think that I never got to feel attached to either of the main characters. I felt Adele was selfish and almost promiscuous, while Gabor was predatory, and obnoxious. That may well have been the intended personalities of the characters, but it just never clicked for me. I felt no compassion for them; I didn't care whether they suceeded or failed.

I guess I felt that the film didn't explain enough of itself (though I do understand the use of vagueness as a tool in film), and in parts that it was kind of too flippant.

I was given the DVD as a gift from a friend who knows I love French films, so I guess I will watch it again in another time to see if my opinion has changed any, but I just thought I'd give out my two cents here (without, I hope, resorting to any childish taunts of "It was gay! It sucked balls!" that so many negative film reviews on these forums can yield.)

I'm with you on this. I stopped watching half way through. The charaters and the dialogues seemed way too unreal to me. I can't imagine real people talking and acting like this and neither can I imagine surreal people doing so. I found this pretentious and too obviously wanna-be-artistic.

What is "pretentious" about it? What is it pretending to be?

It is artistic. Perhaps it's just not your kind of artistic.
