At the beginning she is being interviewed by a psychologist / judge [?] with
some people [ almost like a jury set up ] onlooking - what is it all about ?

I think she was a subject of study for a psychology class or something.

In second thoughts, I think she was being used as witness in a case against the restaurant owner for clandestine prostitution.
