the movie is crap

this movie is awful and i think only idiots would find it funny. i really want my time back for seeing this useless, unfunny garbage. story of course is stupid and the acting (even by some actors i like) is truely embarrassing. i think i'd be ashamed to be affiliated with making this movie if i was involved; it's that bad. the people who find this stuff funny, like actually funny where you laugh, must be very dimm witted and would probably find something funny about drying paint or melting ice cream. again, embarrassingly bad...the only movies i can think of that are worse are caddy shack 2 and house party 4.

I also thought this was a really funny movie when I saw it about 4 years ago as a fluke. I saw it again today on comedy Central and laughed ,A Lot. As a child of the 70's I loved it!
Get a sense of humor or change the damn channel..

Even those of us who didn't live through Watergate can find this movie funny if we've seen All The President's Men.

Both are good movies, for different reasons, obviously.

reply

I wasn't alive during the 70's when all the Watergate stuff was going on, and I don't even live in America. I got this movie because I am a big fan of Kirsten Dunst. After I had watched it the first time, I did ask my mum about Watergate, and she told me what she knew. I then went and looked it up online to find out what it was about. And now I understand the movie better.

BRING OUT SEASON THREE OF "ONCE AND AGAIN" ON DVD!

reply

Well I'm 16 and from Australia so I have absolutely no idea what the Watergate trial is, I thought it was a fictional movie til the end, but I really liked it!

reply

Slugger/Dunderhead -
WTF has understanding or remembering what occured during the POLITICAL scandal of watergate have to do with having a sense of humour??
The jokes were terrible, end of. If u liked them that is fine, your have a different sense of humour to me and that is not a bad thing. But to suggest that someone dislikes the movie because they 'do not understand' or are 'too young to remember' is not only incredibly patronising but also ignorant. And spouting that kind of drivel makes you look incredibly stupid!!

reply

Well I would think having at least a seminal knowledge of the Watergate scandal would make watching this film more enjoyable. Obviously people like this movie who don't know about Watergate, and people dislike this movie who do know about Watergate. Personally I think this movie is hilarious! However, it's satire and a kind of humor I enjoy. I also think this movie paid incredible attention to detail. I'm rewatching after learning a lot more about Watergate and love all the tidbits that actually line up with history.

reply

Totally agree with you Jane. I had the same thoughts when I was reading that guy's post. He made himself look stupid.

ISP ADDRESSES DON'T LIE. If Diablo is nasty to u, I KNOW who he is... PM me!

You complain about this movie, but admit to watching Caddy Shack 2 and House Party 4. No more needs to be said.

reply

hahah true. way true.
i didn't live through the 70's at all, but i thought it was really funny. I'm a history major, and the way they did some things were really clever.

reply

I thought it was hilarious. And I agree with the poster that said anybody who has seen All The President's Men will think this is funny. It was a good way of looking at history. Obviously it wasn't 100% correct, but it made the topic more interesting. The only problem I have with it is the title, and that's only because people give you weird looks when you say your favorite movie is "Dick".

reply

I am a child of the 70's and found this movie utterly hillarious. It is satire in its purest form and does a fantastic job of capturing "the moment" and how the youth of America, at the time, was more pissed off about pre-emption of "Dark Shadows" by the Watergate Hearings than what was going on in the White House. You Suck, Dick!

CLEARLY this film went WAY over your head. Thanks for showing me that there are still people out there so completely and utterly oblivious. The only way the jokes in this film could sail over anyone's head is the lack of anything even slightly resembling the most basic idea of history- which clearly you haven't got. And judging from the accuracy of your grammar, I bet you missed English class a lot too. Simply because you lack the brainpower and relevant historical framework to get the comedy doesn't mean this film is bad. Just that the reviewer walks around with a 3rd grade background in, well, America....

I loved this movie

I personally love this movie, it adds humor to the real story, and like one person already pointed out: change the channel if you don't like it.

reply

You obviously have no grasp of the concept of satire. The movie is meant to be this way, it's a comical spoof of the real events of Watergate. Since you obviously were not around then, or have learned about it, you will not get it. Too bad.

I totally enjoyed it. Too get a great vantage point, watch the 1976 movie "All The President's Men", then watch this movie, and enjoy all the spoofs.

reply

I would of liked the film better if the midget reporter with the longish hair got punched in the throat

reply

That's the way a lot of people thought of the real Carl Bernstien in the 1970's.

i hate this movie, they look like retarded kids...

I think you have to be 13 to post on these boards, honey. Judging from your post, I'd peg your age at around 7.

reply

You would have to have lived thru the era to find most of the jokes funny. Watergate dominated the news to the point where you got sick of it.....much like the OJ trial and the Starr investigations. For instance there was endless speculation as to the missing 20 minutes on the tapes, the movie had a funny answer to it.

reply

I'll admit the movie is probably funnier if you've lived through the era, but I was born in the 80s and I still got most of the references. Although, I have studied the issue a lot since I'm a journalist. Anyway, my point is that if you have any basic knowledge of the watergate scandal, I think the humor is hard to miss. The political jokes and social commentary is really dead on and quite amusing. Plus, I thought the acting was pretty good. I mean, obviously the movie doesn't take itself seriously. It's showing a ridiculous possibility to a real event. And in that spirit I think it's great fun! Just too bad we know this isn't true now that we know who Deepthroat is :( This would have been way better. lol.

reply

You're correct. It was very unfunny and lame. The 6.1 rating currently on IMDb is relatively low, and it says a lot more about the movie than the strange amount of glowing user reviews posted here.

reply

I think some people give it a low rating because they think the movie is anti-Republican and politically biased. It's that sad in America now. (I wonder whether the OP even saw it, frankly.)

reply

yea, but I'd do the two chicks

reply

And some people give it a high rating because they wanna do the two girls. ;)

I guess it all evens out.

reply

It's a great satire for those of us who LIVED through this whole episode in history.

If you don't get it, who cares? Not me.

Well I do remember all of this stuff happening when I was in college. I loved this movie because only one guy by the name of actor Dan Hadeya could play DICK. He can do anything. He was a riot on "Cheers".

At the time of Watergate and being involved with Vietnam this country was in sad shape. From all the riots in the big cities to the protests at college to end the useless war.

I even carried my own signs of down with Nixon and his "I am not a Crook" routine. That war killed a lot of my friends from high school.

This movie is the best satire and made to poke fun at what we had back then.

Nixon was a very sick man who even his wife couldn't deal with him.

For the people who can find the soundtrack of this movie. Go to the home page of this panel discussion and they do mention all the songs in this movie.

I first saw this movie way back in high school. I was born in the eighties and am from Australia - but without even a basic knowledge of the Watergate scandal i still thought the movie was hilarious. I have since gained a degree in History and now, obviously have a much better understanding of the U.S.A during this period, and of the Nixon term. I own this movie on dvd, and each time i watch it the jokes seem funnier than ever, and i find new jokes that i missed the previous time. The more i understand about Watergate, the more intelligent this movie seems. Its an intelligent movie hiding behind a stupid teen movie. Its brilliant.
