This movie was disgusting.

No point, no characters, no redeeming value, just a long toxic waste exposure for your brain, and the people who like it seem to have been been exposed maybe a bit too long. America used to make really good movies, now it is mindless garbage like this with senseless violence and psychopathology to make the lunatics among us feel validated.

reply

Yeah it kind of was I guess. But it had a great performance by Bale and worth watching for that alone.

reply

Not to me. Running this kind of garbage through people's brains is a great way to undermine a great nation and turn their citizens into ignorant idiots.

reply

Jesus STFU....lol.....you dont know film if you think this is a recent development....

reply

Not having proper education is what is undermining your nation.

reply

You read the book? It's so much worse.

reply

How can text on paper be worse than violent visuals?

reply

Vivid descriptions of women being mutilated. Where to begin? There is a part where a woman has cheese shoved into her vagina, then a hungry rat is forced to eat through the cavity to get to the cheese. A young boy has his throat slashed at a zoo. Another woman has her arms and legs nailed to a floor then her tongue is cut out. Yet another woman is decapitated and has her severed head sodomised. I'm just scratching the surface here.

The movie didn't even come close to matching the novel. Sure you don't really see it because it's only described to you, but still!

reply

You're right, the book was more graphic. One of his later books, Glamorama, was even worse.

reply

^^^THIS!^^^

reply

Eh...i liked it just fine

I think that was the whole point of the movie. They were trying to show just how these Wall Street types acted in the 1980s. They were rich, and looked down on poor people. Obviously, Patrick Bateman had no qualms about killing the bum in the alley, along with his dog.

Otherwise, it was...marvelous. There's nothing to say.

reply

Yeah, it's surprising how some people didn't get the idea being presented here. This isn't just some horror movie.

reply

It was the point of the book. Bret Easton Ellis clearly did not like the people he knew in New York. Based on Less Than Zero, he clearly did not like the kids he grew up with in Beverly Hills. Talking about the book LTZ in this case.

The book and movie (AP) are very funny, in a dark humor sort of way. I read the book AP before I saw the movie and Bale's performance was one of the best I have ever seen in terms of BECOMING a character from a book. He was exactly how I pictured Patrick Bateman. Bale did a spectacular job and the movie, like the book, is very funny.

reply

I disagree, this movie is brilliant! You just didn't get it lol.

reply

Just so you know, one can "get" a movie and still dislike it.

reply

I know but the OP obviously didn't get it regardless and is hating it for all the wrong reasons.

reply

so as someone who "got it" , what was the point / message / story / gist ?

reply

The whole point of the movie(and ending) is humanity's inhumanity, our dog eat dog mentality, shallowness and indifferences towards each other because of modern day greed, materialism, self love and selfish self centeredness, the ending pretty much says it all. Notice how no one cares that Patrick Bateman admitted to the murders nor do they care that he committed them and just continue on with their rich shallow lives with no care in the world..... that was the message: inhumanity. Our shallow materialistic society is the true monster here..... not Bateman. He's actually just a reflection of it all, society crafted him. He is a victim of his own surroundings and we are a victim of his surrounding.... vice versa. This movie was just too deep for most people is my guess. It's a dark satire but everyone seems to take it too literally(or think it's just another horror film) which proves the whole point of this movie even more: humanity's shallowness..... one or the other type thinking. This isn't that type of movie, it's not that simple.

reply

Excellent post. I agree with everything you said.

I'm at a loss.
