confused by the names (vega-bison-balrog)

So I just finished the japanese version.

Throughout the whole series the names of Vega, Bison and Balrog are switched around (in spoken word and subtitle)! The masked wearing spanish fighter (originally Vega) is always called Balrog. The black guy (originally Balrog) is called Bison in this. The main evil guy (originally Bison in the game) is called Vega.

Noone mentioned this til now, so I'm wonderung: Are the names correct in the english version?

I found the name switching very annoying and don't really get, why they didn't use the correct names for the characters! There was absolutely no reason to switching them around and it can't hardly be a mistake. Maybe they thought Balrog sounded more spanish than Vega and more of a matador name or whatever.

In the English dub, Balrog is the boxer, Vega is the Spanish wielding-claw ninja and M. Bison is the dictator.

Thanks for your answer! That confirms that the names are only switched around in the Japanese version. Still weird though and I can't make out, why they did that.
