Special Gladiator Safety Wave

Does anyone else remember this?, one time a contender landed on top of Lightning and was knocked out, and Lightning stuck her hand out from under the woman, and started waving. The voice-over man said 'Ah yes, this is the special Gladiator safety signal' to signal to the medics, I just yeah right, they just made it up on the spot. Does anyone else remember this happening or other similar incidents?, and was it a proper thing?
