I have read the entire book several times in the past few years not in Russian, which for me would be impossible, but in English first and later in modern Greek as that language seems to capture the Russian mood and spirit of the story better (as was also in the case of War and Peace). When I learned that movies and even a mini TV series had been made of Crime and Punishment my reaction was good luck, if you can do it. The Russians filmed War and Peace with the help of whole sections of the Red Army for the extended battle scenes and produced a mammoth epic work that required two or three separate sittings over as many days at the cinema theatre and later transposed a restored and trimmed DVD version, still over six hours. Of course, pretty close to ever chapter of the book and excellent casting an innovative cinematography.. Hollywood managed it in in 3 3/4 hours and did an admirable job. but W & P was a novel with a lot of action and development suitable for a movie. Crime and Punishment is not an easy work to translate to the screen as it is entirely cerebral, a torture of the spirit that makes the reader as well as the anti-hero suffer as well. I am about to watch this TV movie on DVD. I have read the mixed comments here, so let's see how it turns out, a ponderous tale with little physical action squeezed into two hours, hmmm?
