where are you come from? I like this movie too and I'm a Chinese. I feel only Chinese can understand this movie deeply.

I am a Chinese too, and I like this movie very much. In my point of view, Jia zhang ke is one of the best and most respectable directors in China now. I've seen three of Jia's movie, and I agree with xijing52, only Chinese could really understand Jia's movies.

i've known jia personally, he's a very humble man

reply

Jia zhang ke was one of the best directors of the 90's in China, i don't think he's done very well in the last couple of years like then.

reply

I'm not Chinese, so I guess I should not even bother trying to understand his work. But many non-Chinese can understand Jia's movies, just as many Chinese may not understand or appreciate them. To limit understanding or appreciation to cultural or national factors alone is antithetical to much of cinema's great appeal. Not all films are universal but most great ones can be appreciated by audiences around the world, not just by viewers in the country or culture that produced them.

I'm a Chinese, and you are very right.

i agree. i love this movie too. It wasnt even a high budget film, actually it was what the director had to do for his Master's degree but it looks really preofessional. One of my favourite Chinese movies

yes, but dont forget, this wasnt profesionally done, it was just the director's MA graduation piece, when he would have just started making movies, so of course hes not gonna have had that much money to do it better. And i this, because the place he graduated (The Beijing Film Academy) is where I studied too.
