Smith V Rolfe

Wow I just saw Pocahontas II right after Pocahontas I, and I was really surprised. The second one was well made, although fell short when put up against the first one, as most sequels do (Lion King 2, Cinderella 2: are you seeing a pattern here?) Anyways, the character I was most disappointed with was John Smith. In the first movie he was an exciting character, eager to learn the new ways of the Native Americans. In the second movie, however, he only had swordfights and had chessy dialogue (In the beginning: Any one want to drop in? After he throws the guy off of the tower, and in the end when Radcliffe tries to stab him and he says "Wow, you're trying to make a point!") I was like "Come on!" I was excited to watch the second one because I really wanted Pocahontas to end up with him, but I don't blame her for going for Rolfe. In the first movie Smith fought for what he believed in when he tried to end up with Pocahontas. In the second one he just told Pocahontas to give up and watch her people die!!! I couldn't believe it!!!

Any thoughts on why the producers did this to John Smith? I really can't come up with anything!

Well, my only guess is that since John Smith didn't wind up with Pocahontas in real life, perhaps the film makers were trying to ease the disappointment of those who were hoping they would in the second film. Also, for whatever reason, Mel Gibson didn't repeat his voice role in this film, so maybe the writer(s) just didn't bother with giving his brother anything worthwhile to say.

(And not all the Disney sequels are terrible. The Rescuers movies were both excellent, and the Aladdin trilogy wasn't too bad. I thought the Lion King 2 and the Little Mermaid 2 were OK-- they could've been better, of course--well, a lot better in places--but they weren't dreadfully awful. As for Cinderella 2 and several more-- I didn't even bother to watch. I wish they'd just come up with new stories and not drag out those perfect-as-are classics)

"That's enough to make me LOL...out loud."

I was extrememly mad. I know that she did end up with John Rolfe in real life, but who cares? I would rather go away enjoying the movie I had just seen, then hating it because it was "historically accurate." I loved the character of John Smith in the 1st one and then they went and made him cheesy and arrogant.

I would have rather they just not made a 2nd one.

The way I figure it, Disney has always been unrealistic. Why start with the realism now by making her end up with Rolfe.

I know, i love john smith! i still does! i don't understand their last dialogue, they couln't be together cause he wanted to explore and she wanted to go back home?! what was that? they just both end their romance cause well we're going separate ways, separate paths, and then she goes to the other john, the rolfe guy who wasn't bad, but john smith was JOHN SMITH!! i mean, not the silly guy of the second one, i agree w/ u, i would also prefer to be it not history accurate! cause that what movies are! a version of the realitY!! for me it will always be smith & pocahontas, even if she didn't marry him in real life, or in the movie!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed this. I can see why the film makers made John Smith a less likable character, but it was hardly believable. It wasn't even the same character from the first movie. I personally think they should have kept the character the same, but introduced some sort of cross-roads for he and Pocahontas to come to. I guess it could have been that John Smith desired to return to England and Pocahontas didn't, so it would have made more sense for her to stay with John Rolfe. At any rate, I thought the movie was badly made and lacked any character development. Even Pocahontas stayed pretty flat.

Smith is better and cuter.

Disney made the mistake in the first film and didn't make 'Pocahontas' historically correct by making her fall in love with John Smith. After we've watched the first movie and completely fall in love with the supercouple, BAM! The second movie they turn the table and become historical, pairing Pocahontas up with her REAL husband and leaving John Smith out in the cold.

The entire sequel took away every single strand of meaning from the first movie.

That is so cruel.

I was so angry when they had Pocohontas end up with Rolfe! I mean, I loved Smith! They made him seem like the bad guy in the second movie, which I hated!...

John Smith, FTW! Rolfe was a brat!

The writers basically just bashed John Smith to take him out of the picture purely for historical accuracy. I don't know why since many Disney adaptions make alterations to the original story. Hell, the first movie tore apart the historical accuracy of what really happened. The second one did too for that matter. Really, the only historical accurate thing they did get right was who she ended up with. In any case, I think they screwed it up big time.

since pocahontas married rolfe in real life, they couldn't really have her end up with Smith in the film. i suppose they did the best they could in making Rolfe seem a better choice for her. And Smith in london probsbly was out of his element, he wAs always an explorer.
