lame

This was one of the lamest movies I have seen in a long time. Its all ripped off from some good movies with similar plots made in the 90s with lame excuses for showing elizabeth shue naked or with a wet t-shirt. sorry but her acting was very unbelievable too.

reply

Nothing wrong with Elisabeth Shue naked or in a wet T-shirt.

reply

Never ever ;)

Haha, but seriously, I was waiting the entire movie to see her progress from autism to normalcy, let alone genius.

Except for a bigger vocabulary, she hadn't changed that much at all.

reply

Really, really bad acting, and very unbelievable depiction of someone with autism.

i totally agree. her acting was just plain bad. i wanted to watch it for the actors who play her lover and brother but she makes is unbearable to watch.

reply

Well, actually it is a remake of Charly(1968) which was developed into a movie by cliff robertson after being in a tv drama based on "Flowers for Algernon"

WOW!

Bad acting? Are you people serious? How many of you ACTUALLY been around kids with autism? Probably NONE of you. Oh and those who say WELL MY SISTERS FRIENDS COUSINS HAS AUTISM AND SHE TOLD ME... Doesn't cut it. So you can't judge her if you don't know the character yourself. OH JOHNNY DEPP IS AWESOME AS CAPTAIN JACK SPARROW! Really, You hang around a bunch of Pirates do you?

Elisabeth Shue did great job. Take the story for what its worth. Redone, rehashed!
Almost every story line has been done people! If only one storyline can be done EVER we wouldn't have any future Hollywood movies or Television shows.

Lighten up.

I don't see you all protesting any motor company's web sites like FORD or Chevrolet saying ALL COME ON ITS STILL THE F SERIES ONLY WITH A EXTRA CUP HOLDER!

Great movie, with a great story and presented by great actors. It was funny, sad and uplifting.

Too bad you all missed it. Must have been watching some thing else.

I totally agree with master jedi- I thought Elizabeth Shue was superb. I don't mind seeing a plot redone when it is as entertaining as I found this to be for late-night cable viewing.
I also enjoyed seeing a young Thomas Jane since I watched him on the series "Hung" this year. I almost didn't recognize him compared to how he looks and sounds 10 years later.

Like I said in the other post, my niece is autistic. I'm pretty sure she would be offended by shue's performace.

reply

yeah well i am autistic and i am not offended, there is many diffrent grades of it if you didn't know

I've been talking with someone on a Asperger's Syndrome/Autism support forum, and they said the same thing. If you're satisfied with a minstrel show type of representation of a person with Autism, well good for you. I expect more respect from people regarding those of us on the Autism Spectrum.

reply

I have Asperger's Syndrome, and I think the movie was a very stereotyped representation of people with Autism.

*in before "Oh you have Asperger's Syndrome, not Autism blah blah blah.."

reply

OMG! I think Elisabeth Shue deserves an academy nomination! I just finished watching the movie and it was absolutely moving! Way to tell em' master jedi! I couldn't have put it any plainer!!! I've worked with autistic children from both ends of the spectrum and Ms. Shue did an outstanding job!!!!

reply

Elisabeth Shue isn't the best actress but she tries and is often very good. I like her because she lacks confidence so she's always interesting to watch and sometimes she really nails it.

This film has a terrible script and within that context, she's the best thing about it. She can only work with the material she's been given and this is a rubbish film more interested in depicting autism for dramatic effect rather than documenting the actual experience of being autistic. It's pretty mawkish.

The movie was all over the place and so were my emotions. Not sure where all of the fault is at, but plenty to go around I expect. At some points it was emotional and tender, while others it was trite and demeaning. The writing was bad, the acting was sub-par, the whole set up was confusing, the editing and missing scenes left us wanting. Going all the way and making this science fiction or even a comedy might have been a better choice, while still dealing with the very real mental issues. Not too often can a movie be charming, stupid, funny and insulting at the same time.

reply

I tried to like it but a lot of the more dramatic moments come off as half-assed and some of the attempts at "comedy" are rather pathetic and in bad taste.

My ignore list is quite large.
