Am I The Only One Who Liked This Movie?

I know some of it was kinda boring, but I really felt like i connected with some of these characters. The only thing I really hated was Robert Downey Jr's
character, I mean how annoying can one guy be?

I thought it was funny, but only had the chance to see it once a long time ago on HBO or something ..
mainly what I remember is finding out my dad was gay that night. At the scene when the guy shows his penis by the pool, my dad turned into some kind of giggly teenage girl and now is engaged to some guy named Tim. gah!

I bought it used at a video store some time ago and just watched it for the first time today. Overall, I liked it. Just came here to rate it (gave it a 6) but was surprised to see how many folks had rated it so low.

I kind of liked Robert Downey Jr's character, esp when the surprise presents itself. Only thing is, I could SWEAR that guys other than Ian were called 'Ian' aat different points in the movie. I think the biggest let down was when Ian's dad did his little speech to Ian. I just didn't buy any emotion there.

Overall, it was worth buying for $1.50.

Actually, overall I thought it was an entertaining, feel good movie. I love Robert Downey Jr., but I too thought "what the hell is this??" I mean, he can pull off a lot, and some of his lines were borderline funny, but...

Other than that, I thought the couples that hooked up were good (I especially liked Jane's character, even though it was soooo predictable that she ended up with Ian).

Also, I didn't think there was much of a pay off with the whole Ian & his dad storyline... And it should have been one of the plots that carried the movie. So, it failed from that standpoint.

But it's a fun movie overall... Consider renting it and see what you think.

You are not alone-I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!! It's one of those mindless, stupid, put-it-on-the-TV Saturday afternoon movies that just makes u appreciate dumb cinema and mediocre actors.... and what else can you ask for from this gem: a large penis (on a handsome man), pregnant women having sex, a model who can't act, Robert Downey cussing in German, Stephan Baldwin's almost-visible balls, that tall black guy coming from post-coital with Danny Pintauro's look-a-like....IT'S GRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEAT!!!!

I discovered this movie in college, and it's so dumb that it ranks in my Top 10 Favorite movies of all time...u gotta enjoy stuff like this....

must admit i gave it a 1.

I didn't think this movie was that bad. The blonde and the pregnant chick both had nice racks and it had a few funny lines.
"There is a world beyond the 5 inches of your penis!"

It's no masterpiece, but it's not that bad a movie.

reply

The quote is actually:
"There is a world beyond the 5/7 inches of your/my penis!", because Baldwin gives himself a few inches.

I was entertained when I saw it. Then HBO began to show it all the time, and I watch it whenever its on; mostly for the above aforementioned reasons. Allison Eastwood and Suzanne Cryer are great, but I should point out that Cryer had a body double (a real pregnant woman was obviously used as a body double in the "poist-coitus/post-crying" scene), but she also showed her chest a couple times during that scene--it's strange, to say the least. If you examine it closely, you'll see what I mean--it's poorly edited.

In that regard, it's a winner for both sexes in the audience. Something for everyone, and its funny in places. The only people who will be disappointed are Claudia Schiffer fans, because no matter how Robert Downey, Jr. tries to pull down her bra, her nipples fight it. I've heard of pasties, but in this case it seems like a tender area was treated with spirit gum. No loss for me, Schiffer's acting in this film is off-putting, and any guy watching the movie would choose to shack up with A. Eastwood or S. Cryer's characters instead within the first 20 minutes.

It wasn't until I read Roger Ebert's review of it in the Sun-Times that I saw why it was considered a "lousy" movie. He gave it a low rating--A HALF A STAR, as low as it gets before the reviewer walks out and it gets no rating--and he gives legitmate reasons in his scathing review. For example, he points out how Jane (Suzanne Cryer, a.k.a. the "pregnant chick") was overacting, and went everywhere talking about her baby and clutching her fake belly like she was trying to prevent the creature from 'Alien' from bursting out of her chest. When the movie came out, Cryer was not yet a mother, but since then she has had a child... maybe if the film were shot again today, she'd have played the part differently.

And then there is the mention of Baldwin's obsession with Schiffer's nipples, which he greatly exaggerates in the movie. Twentysomethings run from a male character's exposed member like teenagers, and even the discussing of intercourse reminds him of how pre-teens talk and act. He's not far off.

Someone compared this film to 'American Pie'. I actually like this movie better than that film ('AP' was a modern day rehash of 'Porky's'), but given that these adult characters act like junior high-school students, I would instead compare it more to 'The Idiots'. That's kind of how it plays out... a simple, American adaptation of that foreign film. See it and 'American Pie' and tell me which of the two films 'Friends & Lovers' resembles more closely.

Okay, so it's not a great movie. But I can't help but enjoy it, for whatever it is worth.

I really liked the movie. Some people just don't realize that indy movies move differently than movies that are made by the large Hollywood Co.

Loved it!!!!!!

You are NOT the only one! I am definitely a fan. Sometimes people shouldnt always watch movies with such high expectations, and cliche isn't all that bad if the story and character is there. And they were definitely there. I thought this movie was really great! It's a shame I don't see these actors in any hit movies or tv series now, because they were fantastic.

i too liked this movie so no you are not the only one i just wish it wasn't always on at 3 or 4 in the a.m. when its actually on tv
