I am confused about the fires... there is one in the beginning, and also in her dream, showing her burnt mother and teacher. Who was that? There were comments about a teacher dating her mother?

The scene later on, her dream, was just a way of showing that she was still haunted by that fact that she killed them.
The reason she killed them was because that was the teacher she fell for at her old school, and when he tried to get a restraining order on her while at the same time fooling around with her mom, Debbie got very enraged.
