Very weird, very scary sci-film that someone submitted

Does anyone remember a film that someone submitted to the show during 1974 or 1975 that featured
strange music and avant-garde effects achieved by scratching directly on the film negative? There were kids running under a building, some of whom looked like zombies or something, wearing navy-blue sweatshirts and pasty make-up. I remember that they never showed the whole thing, and they had a round-table discussion about it on a later episode. I was very young at the time, and it gave me many, many nightmares. Peace.

I think I remember this. It started out with an animated bit with a couple of spaceships, one shooting at the other...?

And towards the end, a couple of kids were running away from whatever, and one shouted to the other, "Jump!", and they both jumped, only to be frozen in place by some ray (scratched onto the negative, as you pointed out).

I would have been 7 or 8 at the time. I don't remember being afraid--I actually thought it was extremely cool. Made me want to make my own movie.

The best part was the music, though. Any further information is appreciated! Peace.

This was called The Cosmic Crystal. I've been wondering about it myself for years. Was there more to the story or was that it? Anyone out there know?

The "Cosmic Crystal" clip is floating on YouTube somewhere.

The music at the beginning is "Sysyphus (part 1)" by Pink Floyd, from their 1970 album UMMAGUMMA.

I remember that I found it very cool and inventive that they made the ray gun effects by scratching the negative. I'm afraid that's all I remember. Was there also some stop-motion involved?

I'm sorting out alot about the years these kids were on and realize I was now in error about who was on before or after who (and I was probably watching many of these after they had all left the show), but I do remember the video submission you are referring to.

The approach was it was a scary movie, but upon viewing a clip, one of the kids, Accadio (sp), said it looked more like an adventure than it did scary.

Now Accadio would be what I considered a later kid (after the ten group kids), but I suspect that could still make him a '75 kid.

He would have been on there with Lavelle (black kid in glasses with an afro) and Karen and I think Ron, possibly the overly favorite Chris, who did Zoom Views and Whether.

THAT WAS INTERESTING!

Based on the ending, I have some idea of why Zoom regarded it as scary and not as Accadio saw it, being adventurous.

Even more interesting, this was made the same year as Mystery of Dracula's Castle, which I recall from over forty years ago on Disney and just managed to watch YESTERDAY! -- finding it on youtube.

It began with the kids wanting to make their own movie about Dracula.

What was especially interesting was the total disregard at that time to cars, signs and the like, in both the movie and this program.

Nowadays, there would be tighter shots to take out overhead signs or a blanket draped over that fire hydrant or Tow Area sign. Just to give it a less earth feel.

As for the ending, I'd deduce that was a Twilight Zone (tho again, more present day Night Gallery) feel.
