Male geisha? MAY CONTAIN MINOR SPOILERS

At one point of the film, a group of convicted women is brought to the whorehouse to work as geisha. There are several men among them, all dressed in female kimonos. They refer to themselves as bosom-less, hairy chested women! No one seems puzzled by this, so I wonder whether this was common practice in Japan? Eunuchs maybe?
