Compare to Angel Heart

I have a LOT of trouble watching anything evil or occultic. Due to my love for Mickey Rourke, and his other fans' insistence that I MUST watch Angel Heart, I tried. I absolutely could NOT watch that movie!

Despite my great love for Johnny Depp, I have always avoided this movie for the same reason.

I recently upgraded my DVR system to one that will record anything involving any actor whose name I speak into the remote, and Johnny was among them. Yesterday, it recorded The Ninth Gate. Of course my first instinct was to delete it, but I thought I would at least ASK those who have watched both it and Angel Heart if they are similar in the creepy demonic factor.

Please be kind.

Thank you!

Trust me, The Ninth Gate is VERY easy to watch compare to Angel Heart. The tone of the film is nowhere near as dark and bleak as Angel Heart's, the violence is pretty mild, and there's even some humor in it. Now as far as the whole demonic part goes, if you normally find stuff like that unsettling to watch, then some scenes in this movie might creepy you out. But honestly, I think this is one of the least disturbing films of its kind.

Thanks for your input!

Yeah, I don't mind violence, per se, just specifically the demonic stuff. How many minutes would you say 'might creep me out' in that regard?

reply

Not sure how many minutes exactly but I can list some scenes:

There's a Satanic mass but I don't recall any sacrifice out anything like that. There are a couple of deaths where it's imputed that either the coven/cult was behind or the devil himself. A sex scene. A man hanging upside down similar to a Satanic engraving from the book.

That's all I can really think of. The parents guide in here might give you a better idea. I've never seen Angel Heart but I do watch quite a few occult movies and found this pretty mild collared to a lot.

Both films are dark, mysterious dramas about men who seem to be lost and are in search of the truth. In both films, it appears that Evil wins, but the 9th Gate seems a bit more optimistic in the end. Both films have a fair amount of sex and violence, but I don't consider this content to be too extreme compared to exploitation horror films. On the intellectual side, Angel Heart strikes me as just another 'smoke & mirrors' film. I have a strong preference for the 9th Gate, and my interpretation of the latter changes with each viewing. However, I don't think you will get the take home message without some help.

Polanski assumes that he is addressing a knowledgeable audience. He gives us very subtle clues, and he never bothers to spell it all out in black & white like they do in Angel Heart. My advice, do a little reading on Gnosticism before you watch the film. You'll probably understand the ending better. Here's one more important clue:

I'd say they were quite similar in tone. Personally, I prefer Angel Heart. The Ninth Gate is far less violent and has less sex but the ending is a bit effed up.

I must agree with your statement.

I hardly remember anything about Angel Heart. Was unmemorable and I only saw it about 2 yrs ago finally. Ninth gate is awesome. Watch it at least once a year.

If you like Depp, have you seen "Dead Man"? Check it out.
