The Watch

Maybe I just watched this in too many separate intervals...but I got confused.
What was the (eventual) significance of the watch that Rachel gives Bertie in the end? Their dad had given it to the guy that killed himself? It was a superb movie, with many subplots....but I had trouble because I did not watch it consectutively?
