I disagree. The movie really lacked a plot, and few things were ever explained. Mainly why they had such huge amounts of powers, why that one guy could turn into steel, etc.
In my opinion, Metropolis is the best animated movie of all time.
That is really a pity since the plot is actually very good. There probably wasn't enough room in the film to describe the background story in detail.
I suggest the series or even better... read the manga.
For a series with over 100 episodes, I think they did a good job of condensing the plot into a 1 1/2 hour movie.

who cares why a guy can transform his body into steel ( not to mention hes 3 feet tall) it dosnt matter. i cant imagine that any sort of rationalization would have helped out the movie.
its about brutality and death and exploding people and chopping them into peices.
the story is an archaic one... standard "messiah" plot... like dune, or... uh...the bible" it simply serves as a vehicle for graphic violence... and im glad.
its definitly not the greatest anime of all time tho.
